I just want to publicly thank Jerry for his glossary that he has been building behind the scenes. Jerry, many of us would not even have been aware that you are still adding to it but you are. I applaud you for that. If you haven't already seen it check it out, it's brilliant! http://www.gardenstew.com/blog/e10953-5 ... index.html P.S I'll definitely place your glossary in a more prominent position before too long. I need to get some other stuff done on the site first and then it will be possible.
The new Gardenstew volunteer was having trouble navigating the twisty little passages all alike with only room numbers to reference, when she happened across a door that said… LIBRARY At last, I found the place she thought. She opened the door and glancing around the cavernous room, in one corner she saw an older worker with glasses. He looked up from his desk as she entered. "May I help you?" he queried. "Yes." She replied, "Today is my first day here and already the corridors are a maze of little twisty passages all the same." "Ahhhh." The white haired worker said with a knowledgable voice. "I know the feeling." "What is your name?" "Glossy." she said as she tried to stand a little straighter. "Well Glossy, you will get use to the passages after awhile. Anyway, you are in the right place. I am the one who put in a request for a new volunteer." "Welcome to the library. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay with us. Please, follow me. I do have a new project and I think you will like it." He said getting up from his desk. He walked down past the library stacks. He arrived at a shiny new desk. "This will be your new desk." She smiled as she admired the new desk. She looked around and saw a door leading to the corridor, it said, "You will notice that the stacks in this area are rather sparse." As he pointed to the nearly empty shelves, "Your new task," He continued, "Will be to enter into new books the words and terms and explanations provided by people that walk through that door or that are send to you on your new computer. So, get aquatinted with the area because pretty soon it will get very busy." He left to go back to his desk. The room was now very quiet. Then the computer beeped……somebody had just entered a word. She sat down in the comfortable chair, looked at the computer screen and smiling, started to read the e-mail. Glossy hummed as she read……. Then there was a knock at the door…… The Glossary Index: http://www.gardenstew.com/blog/e10953-5 ... index.html
I am glad to have this available & foresee using it when I enter a plant in the plant directory. Leave shapes in particular have confounded me.
Loved your post Jerry. You can really paint a picture. Can you inform Glossy that she is not a worker, but a volunteer CM, have you seen the leaf shapes page?
Frank--I agree, Jerry has a great imagination & ability to spin a yarn! That leaf shapes page is great. How do I find it in the future?
The link to the leaf shapes page appears when you try to enter a Leaf Shape for a plant in our database. Can you also bookmark it just in case?
Frank, I don't know how to bookmark things, but I was able to find it by doing as your suggested & pretending to enter a leaf shape. There are 2 guides available! Thanks.
Three cheers Cheryl!! Nice page!! O.K. that was three toots.....close enough. I did not know that page was there Just goes to show you, there are many, many parts of gardenstew to explore. Jerry REF: http://www.gardenstew.com/plantstew/leaf-shapes
Thanks Jerry! That glossary is going to be a big help to alot of people. I did the leaf shapes when I first arrived here, because I had absolutely no clue about them. And it's still something that I haven't quite grasped yet and have to refer to it occasionally when someone is describing a plant. I have the original printed out and keep by my desk. Frank, I wonder if it would be possible to have the shapes in another spot besides just when entering plant details? Or have it available to "save" like we do certain posts/topics?
