After church yesterday a couple who are visiting the area said they wanted to see our gardens. They are from the north and hadn't seen a functioning vegetable garden in September.
They came over and she immediately announced that she is afraid of tomato plants! What? She was willing to walk to the barn, but wouldn't come within 50 feet of the vegetable garden. I asked her why, and she said that tomato plants had those big green worms on them and she was afraid of the plants. I tried to explain she was actually afraid of tomato hornworms, and that my tomatoes didn't have any (thank you, chickens!). She obviously thought I was trying to trap her into being fodder for hornworms because she absolutely refused to get near the garden.
Her brave husband however approached the dreaded plants and saw some little green tomatoes. He survived.
    Sometimes I wonder . . . .

Duh :headscratch: Just what did she expect to see growing in your garden then? At least her husband appreciated your efforts and wasn't scared of anything.

What does she think a small worm can do to her? They don't bite people. At least I've never been bitten by one. Just peel them off and put them somewhere else.

There are so many things in Texas with BIG horns......like Air Horns of Texas and Texas longhorn steers, so obviously, one would not want to be gored by a huge green hornworm. Then there is the hand affliction associated with horns.....very prominent in the student body of University of Texas and there is no cure. No sense taking chances with those green tomato hornworms. :)

It sounds like her husband wanted to see your garden and the wife didn't? Funny that she'd be ok going to the barn but too scared to go into the veggie garden.

I don't like the sight of some of the garden bugs, but it doesn't keep me out of the garden.

Ok, I am a Yankee, but I am not scared of tomato plants or the nasty hornworms. Not all Yankees are sissies. Maybe she confused your tomato plants with the cannibal plant/s in that movie "Little Shop of Horrors" ? :-?
