After being on G/S, and hearing from all around the world, I never thought this would happen to me. While at work, restocking the Live Veggies on the racks,(produce at Kroger) a woman came up to me and asked for some Sweet Pea. (hint to the Brits.) After talking to her, I found out that she was from London, moved here w/her hubby, and is looking for some Sweet Pea. Talking further, I explained that I do veggies, but love the flower aspect. I told her about G/S, and she wants to know more. (Also stated that there are G/S talkers aboard!) She told me to ask on the site,(hint) and find out about it, that the Brits are well-versed, and that it is excellent. Someone clue me in, I'm either ignorant or too stupid to know better. I've heard of it, but I didn't know it was edible. Long story short(we talked for about 30 mins, had a blast) I gave her the site name, my name, and expressed that she join. In return, she gave me her phone # wanting to know more, and wants to know more about the site, and especially more about the people from England and in that area. My question to the people in England (or anyone else for that matter) is What is edible from the Sweet Pea? I never thought that I would actually meet someone from a place that is from somewhere that I talk to(orread from) on the net. HOW COOL IS THAT! That made my week, and anyone from that area that has any ?s, I will talk to her in a few days, so let me know. Large Universe-Small World! That was Too Cool! 8) Happy Holidays to All at G/S! has any ?s, I will talk w/her later this weekend, so feel free to let me know
Sweet peas are highly toxic and if ingested can cause permanent paralysis, slow and weak pulse, shallow breathing, pain, weakness, tremors, nervous excitement and convulsions so are a definite no-no. I have heard that some Chinese restaurants have served sweet pea leaves (cooked) but wouldn't be willing to try them myself. I think the lady may have been thinking of 'Sugar Snap Peas' which are lovely and sweet and the pods can be eaten as well as the peas. I hope we'll meet your new British friend soon here on GardenStew. She will certainly be made to feel right at home by all our members whether they're British or not. :-D
That's a nice story DMullins. It's a small world after all. I hope your new friend doesn't eat any sweet peas...
I'm thinking she is referring to http://www.zeer.com/Food-Products/Birds ... /000005818 We always called them sweet peas.
What a lovely story. I have found that the English are just about everywhere on the planet, alongside the Norwegians you also find just about everywhere etc. etc. I've had the good fortune to actually meet people from the Stew, which was exciting and tremendous fun. I'm hoping I might get to meet more in the future. Seeing I'm presently the only Norwegian on here, with a couple of Swedish members, I've got a long way to travel to see anybody.
I think the funny thing is that we all know each other pretty well, but if we walked past each other in the street we wouldn't be any the wiser
Yes, to Frank's point...I have had that thought before too. The other week when I was walking around the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens, there were lovely people that you could tell were so enjoying the flowers and plantings, studying them closely with big smiles or looks of contentment....reminded me of all of us here. My friend who was with me said -- "maybe some of your GardenStew people are here today but you wouldn't recognize them... wouldn't that be weird..." So I started thinking about standing up on the highest point in the main hall and calling out "GardenStew, GardenStew, anybody here from GardenStew???" You never know, right?
Heh heh heh.... tis true, you never really DO know. Well, your posting about the conservatory made me redall your recent posts of the Longwood Gardens. Was there a Longwood Gardens III that I somehow missed? I had hoperd that you would post piccies of some of the other aspects of the complex. I went to their website to have a look and read for myself and discovered that there is oooooooodles to see there. I am glad that you posted what you did. It's a pretty magical-looking place.
I wonder what would have happened if Daisybeans actually did that? What! Do you mean that you don't look like your avatar in RL?
What a great story dmullins. As Eileen says, the lady from London was most likely speaking of sugar snap peas. Perish the thought that anyone would actually consume sweat peas I hope she does join the GS, the more Brits the merrier It's great to be part of such a worldwide family, this forum is the greatest
