Stopped by a smaller hardware store the other day and checked out their pretty limited garden center. I picked out two new plants. One is called Purple Robe (Nierembergia scoparia). I put it in the flower bed in the front yard.
The other one I just fell in love with on sight... Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus). I got both of them for less than $6.00

Here's a closer look at the Persian Shield.

And at the grocery store today, they had plants "3 for $10". There wasn't a whole lot left to pick from... but I did find two Cigar Plants and a Bottle Brush.

I kept one of the Cigar Plants for myself. I hoping to go visit my neices new home and flowers beds tomorrow (and check out her folks' new stuff too)... so I sent out and email to them saying I had two extra plants. The niece gets first pick. And the other goes to my brother & sis in law. And if they don't want them... guess I'll just have to find a place for them here!

I really like the Persian Shield. I need some of that. It will come into the greenhouse for the Winter here. I try to keep as many plants over the Winter as I can.

Hi, I have the persian sheild, under a tree in full shade....colour is magnificent and it has a spike with blue flowers. It grew to 3ft.and yesterday I cut it almost to ground level, no fear of it dying, in fact this morning I think it was laughing at me.I tried some in the sun but lost that lovely colour. It strikes easily too, a good value plant!

I think we're all in agreement that the Persian Shield is a real beauty. I love the colour and the texture of the leaves.

Cherylad--Congrats on your new plants! Particularly on the 3 for $10! What a deal. I too love the Persian Sheild. The color is amazing.

Chocolate, what does "it strikes easily too" mean? Does that mean you can root cuttings from it?

    Thanks everyone.
The Persian Shield is placed where it will get morning sun only. When I was potting it up and thought... another plant to bring indoors for the winter.
Oh well small price to pay for something so pretty!
