Of course there are crocuses, snow bells, jonquils, tulips and lots of other things that lets one know that spring is on it's way...or has arrived, but for me, when I see scenes like this, then I know for sure it's close at hand. It's the one thing that epitimizes it for me. I'm wondering what you guy's single sign of spring is. Have you got a piccy to go with that?
Oh ladybirds are such wonderful little creatures. I soooo enjoy seeing the first ones in my garden. :-D I think the first snowdrops are what really brings the fact that spring is on its way to me here in Scotland. Mine are still only about 2" out of the soil at the moment but I'll be boring you all with piccies of them very soon.
I'll send you some of mine, Sjoerd! We've got them inside our home all winter long (I guess they're actually Japanese beetles, but they look the same and can be pretty pesky). I'm constantly sweeping up dead ones throughout the cold months, and the little buggers bite! One of my earliest spring moments is the smell in the air. We live in a wooded area full of pine trees, and they give off a "clean" smell once the temps warm up in April. That's finally when all the Japanese beetles move themselves outside (yeah!).
Hello Sjoerd. No pict. yet here. But as soon as my crocuses pop their heads out of the ground, I'll be sure to get some picts. Also when our Robin birds start coming back that is usually our hint of spring.
My "definately spring"-thing is when the farmers fertilize their fields with cow dung. I'm _not_ posting a photo of that. I love your ladybirds, Sjoerd. I'd love to have them residing in my roses.
The Robin's seem to show up long before spring around here the past few years. But nothing says spring to me quite like: Tulips Lilac's - LOVE their scent! Oh yes, and new babies!
Awww.... The baby is lovely! The flowers too, of course, but furries always get my undivided attention.
*stealing pictures like mad* I needed that! Where I live, we are in the thick of it for another 2 months at least. We don't really have a fall here, there's only about 3 weeks between hot summer weather and the possibility of frost. So the no-gardening season is a real draaaaaaag. January and Feb. typically alternate between downpours and freezing (rarely snows tho this year is has a bit). Really, you can't count on no-frost until Mother's day. But oooooh the garden centers go nuts for Mothers day!!!

Lilacs are my favorite, too!!! Nothing beats that smell. I've got several planted, and always have a fresh bouquet or two inside when they're in bloom, which is in May here. We woke up to a beautiful covering of snow this morning...not enough to go outside and play in, but the trees were sure beautiful on the way into work.
The first signs of spring for me is when the azeleas are blazing with color. Our daffodils will bloom before there time because of our crazy weather in MS. the forsynthias will bloom early too. The azeleas let me know spring is here to stay.
