I have some vacation scheduled for October. I have a cousin in Austin I haven't seen since we were both 17. (Don't ask when that was) There is an event there I want to attend. One of Guy Clarks songs mentions the Chili Parlor Bar, I wanna see it. And on top of all that, why the hell not?

Any of you Tejano's have any recommendations? The missus likes Junque and thrifting. Naturally we couldn't be taking much back with us. I like history, the real thing, not the reel thing.

    BTW, 11hunnert miles both ways.

    Whaddya y'all got?

Okay, first we are NOT Tejanos, they are Mexican-American inhabitants of southern Texas. We are either Texians (also known as Texasians, Texilingans, Texicans, and Texonians).
But you will get laughed at less if you refer to us simply by our names or as Texans.
A tour of the State Capital building is very interesting along with the memorials on the grounds around it. If you have a concealed license you will not be allowed to carry inside leave it in the car instead, only those with a Texas license can carry inside.
The Texas State Cemetery is located at 909 Navasota St, Austin, TX 78702 and has the state's shortest state highway running through it. Many well known people laying around there.

Also I think there is a zoo there but we haven't been there. http://austinot.com/guide-bat-season-in-austin March through November is bat season, with over a million Mexican Free-tail bats leaving their shelter under the bridge to feed....on bugs not blood of humans.

If you like night life you will find all sorts of food, music and even some assorted 'weird-s' on 6th street in downtown. Sadly the bearded man in the bikini has passed and no longer lives in a makeshift tree house on the corner.
Iron Works used to be a great place for BBQ but new owner ship changed too many things. But since you will not have eaten the original food to compare it to you might really like. You can sit inside or outside on the covered balcony and watch the river flow by, if there has been enough rain to make it flow.

There are most likely lots of junque shops, we have never really done any shopping for junque there. Just to a google search for Antique Malls in Austin Texas and you will find a bunch of them. I don't know if you are familiar with Antique Malls but they are large, usually former grocery store buildings, that have been turned into an indoor 'mall' where dealers of anything from antiques to good ole junk rent 'booths' to sell their wares. There is one counter at front where you pay and they do the keeping records of which dealer sold what and gets how much money.
Those have a wide variety of goodies but the real junque that I like (rusted metal, wrought iron, barnwood, etc) is usually located at the back of the store.

Also, if you love old cars http://www.dicksclassicgarage.com/ is in San Marcos about 30 minutes east of Austin when you are heading toward San Antonio. I am not really interested in cars but that place had me thoroughly enjoying myself for a couple of hours, nothing newer than a 59 Ford. They even have a 1936 Chrysler Imperial built specifically to carry the King and Queen of England to the 1936 Chicago Worlds Fair.

Also, if you are going down I-35 to get there you will going through Waco and I can give you info for several junque shops there, the Dr. Pepper museum and the Texas Rangers Museum.....not the baseball team, but the original law enforcement folks.
    Enjoy your trip,

Have a great trip, Mr. Guy.
I've been to Austin. Texas has a lot to see and do, so I hope that you will have some pics and experiences to post when you get back.
