This is up for grabs here, just something to add the little added twist to the Stew. I found this rock a few months back, the archelogist, has the photo also and has visited the rock and taken his own pics. He's still studying it, along with a million other projects, but since its okay now to post it,, tell me what you think. Does anyone see writing, or carvings, or pictures of something,,,or nothing at all. I'm just curious. Eileen please pass this on to Duncan. Okay the rock is at the North Sea, here in Lofoten. It sits just behind the huge boulders that jut into the sea. We don't know if its been washed up or has always been there, or i should say i haven't been told. So here ya go. Let the imaginations run wild! What makes it so appealing is its too uniform. Also thats moss in the crevices.
Ooooh, that makes me think of Ogham inscriptions or possibly Cuneiform script. Possibly a grave stone or village or farmstead marker? Be sure to let us know what it turns out to be.
that looks most definately like human markings of some kind near to us we have what are thought to be open graves which are cut into the stone right on the irish sea coast and there are scorings in the stone there fantastic find archaeolgy and ancient history is fascinating stuff
I'm very curious about this, because it doesn't look like runic writing to me, even in the most primitive form. But then i'm far from being an expert, or even an amature for that matter. It could be possiable for a very huge rock to travel to here by way of the sea. We are in the Gulf stream. This rock is really huge too. Think of the size of a seat on a chair. Now double it. Its that big. Also the Nordland Norsk, have been traveling the seas way before even the Viking times. So its very possiable for a fellow visitor, or a writing that was picked up from a journey...... Ohhhh we can run wild with this,,,lol. Another thing to concider is this, Vestvågøy (this island) was at one time all Sami. The indiginous peoples of the North, or Lappland, or the Arctic, how ever its looked at. things that make you go,,,,hmmmmmm. (remember Arsenio)lol.
Biita I've just sent this on to Duncan so let's hope he can come up with some ideas for us as I find the markings intriguing. They definately look man- made but that's all I can say. Duncan has studied runes so, who knows, he might just have a clue to what they're all about.
That looks fascinating. I would sure love to know where that originated from and if those markings are man-made. Please, keep us posted, Biita. Gardengater
Thanks all, for the comments. I also wanted to say, were not sure if the rock is even in the right position, it could be upside down too. Who knows. When I'm told what it is,, i'll let everyone know what the conclusion is. but in the meantime it is fun to just wonder all the possiablities.
What an interesting stone. It does look like writing, doesn't it? I downloaded your pic then rotated it to look at it from different angles. I could not see anything that looked familiar to me at all. Ach, but then even if I DID see a Sami or Norwegian word--I wouldn't know it. I'm really intertested to know what the folks decide it is. I wonder if there are "paint" traces in the depths of the carvings (under the moss). That might help to give it an age or insight to the language, if it is indeed a word. I wonder if there is anything under the rock.
Am i the only one who thinks that would look good in my corner flower bed? LOL! It will be kewl to find out what it really is please keep us informed.
You know PD, lol, when i came across this rock, the first time, i had my son and husband with me, I was ocean rock hunting for the garden. All i could at first think of was, wonder if my 2 men can carry this,,, you know the look where the one eyebrow goes up, you start to look all around,,,,then thank goodness common sense took over and we just took pics and passed on to the archeologist, didn't try to move it or nothing. Sigh, maybe when its all over, i might get to keep this rock,, who knows,,or just leave it where it is, and plant a flower near it,,,lol.
I sure would like to have it in my yard.I wonder what it says or if its just markings.ummm its a puzzle ok.
