I found some pansies in the woods behind my new apartment. They were discarded there when the maintenance crew changed the plants under the entrance sign. Most of them were either dead or dying, but there were a few that were still doing ok. I just moved in and didn't have any garden supplies, so I took some styrofoam pieces out of the box that held my tv and taped them together to form a long pot. I also thought it would be a good way of recycling the styrofoam instead of throwing it away. I grabbed a few of the pansies, planted them in it, and watered them. The next day I went out to check on them and they were starting to perk up. Today, they are looking really good. This is what they look like now. Pansies in styrofoam container. I'm sure the pansies appreciate the rescue and you get to enjoy the flowers. You may even get some new ones. Good find!! Jerry
What a lovely way to recycle flowers and styrofoam! Those pansies do look good--probably glad to be alive. Make friends with the maintenance guys--they may give you a hint as to when plants are going to be dug. Some home-made cookies ought to get their attention! Is there drainage in the styrofoam container? If not, you could poke a few holes in the bottom.
kudos for you. Nice to have such pretty flowers to enjoy and not have to spend any money to enjoy them.
Great save!! The planter will last for years too. I got some new Chrysanthemum plants many years ago when I asked the garden guys where I worked what they did with the divisions that wouldn't fit in the space they had available. They said they would go in the trash, but I could have as many as I wanted.
Free flowers are always a bonus as is a "freeish" planter. It does have drainage. I loosely taped the two pieces together to allow for drainage through the crack. They seem to love it.
Pansies Looks good! Usually we have the kind of winter that eventually kills off pansies tho they do last quite a while. Mine still look good in this mild winter so I'll hate to rip them out if they last til Petunia time, but it's one or the other. :-?
