I've lost about 30# over the last year and a half by giving up breads and sugar. Everything else I cook is the same as usual, I just eat smaller portions and if I get hungry again between meals I drink a glass of milk.

When you have to give up foods you really like, the craving will overwhelm your will power to stick with a diet. That's when diets fail and you gain more weight.
He should have one day a week to eat some of the goodies he has given up...not a whole bag of cookies but he can make one package last at least a month by allowing himself to eat 3-4 on that one day. On that one day he can have gravy on his potatoes or toast with breakfast. That one day a week of treating yourself will be something to look forward to and make sticking with a diet soooo much easier.

Walking and cutting out a few damaging food items will do a lot more to help him drop the weight than working out in a gym.

I like the "ones" you can buy in the produce department. I think they are dried plums. Don't eat too many though  I also like the little string cheeses for a snack or a hard boiled egg :smt117
