We picked tomatoes last night. Two 5 gallon buckets full! They've already been run through the Victorio Strainer and are in the process of becoming tomato sauce. There's more coming on...if the frost holds off. There's a mix of heirloom tomatoes- Barred Boar, Olpaka, Lush Queen, and Brandy Wine. Those are in the greenhouse. Polbig (F1 Hybrid) is planted in the garden. They are an early mid-size tomato. I won't plant them again as, to me, they don't have a lot of flavor.
WOW...how many plants, 5? I was happy with freezing a few I cut up from the 2 plants we have on the side of the garage.
I'm in the same boat ... been picking tomatoes non stop! Still lots on the bushes too, hope I get the time to make sauce soon!
I'm just happy that they are producing so well. Last year wasn't as good as we hoped so we really over planted tomatoes. Sherry, this year we have 10 plants in the green house (heirloom) and another 9 in the garden. The ones in the garden a just starting to turn red but we'll give them away. They just don't have the flavor of the old ones in my opinion, but I guess any vine-ripened tomato tastes better than what you buy in the store. Carolyn, Yes, most of the one bucket are Olpaka which is an excellent large sauce tomato and for fresh eating too. The green striped large one is a barred boar and they are the best for fresh eating.
"The green striped large one is a barred boar and they are the best for fresh eating." As I looked at the picture I wondered what that was... my first thought was Berkley Pink Tie Dye, but it wasn't the right shape. Is the Barred Boar a good tasting one? the Berkley is. Save some seeds and we can swap them if you want. AND as I relook at this post it is from last year. no wonder I was struggling remembering commenting on this.. duh. Here I thought the neighbors dementia was rubbing off on me.
They all looks delicious ...yum! Is that a beef steak tomato in the right bucket? I can imagine eating it fresh with ham and lots of butter in a sandwich.
Those were all tomatoes from last year. This year we are growing Parks Whoppers (and they are HUGE but taste soo good) and Celebrity tomatoes. They are big and tasty too. They also make really nice sauce.
