We've got icy cold weather, and since I can't make it go away I thought I'd make something from it. So I found two plastic bowls, one smaller than the other. I put water in the bottom of the biggest one, inserted a pop cap and put it outside to freeze. When frozen I put the smaller one inside the big one on top of the ice and poured cold water between the two, weighing the smallest down with fossil rocks from my children's collection. I left it outside overnight and well into the afternoon before pouring a little bit of hot water into the small bowl to loosen it from the ice. Then I tipped the big one over and put a cloth dipped in very hot water on top. The ice came loose in seconds. I found a candle, lit it, tipped the ice bowl on top and voila! we've got the cutest outdoors lantern, made by Mother Nature: Close-up of the ice:
Love it Droopy but hate the cold to much to go in and out freezeing my bunns off trying I sure do like yours.
Thank you for liking our first attempt. We're already thinking about how to improve it. Of course the forecast says milder weather, just when we finally found out what to use the cold for.
Now why didn't I think of something as ingenius as you when we had all our ice? :-? I love your ice bowls Droopy and if the temperature keeps dropping I may yet get a chance at making one for myself.
Yet another clever thing from those clever 'wegians. This ice lamp looks like it had real promise. What kinf of improvements are you guys planning on making? Will you make the next ones larger? Taller or wider? These may turn out to be even more interesting than the snow-laterns that you have made in the past. Keep us posted, please.
I wish you were going to be here this weekend for our deep snow. I would love to have a playmate to make some snow creations. I like the lanterns a lot! I was thinking about your kids' snow people with the glowing hearts too.
I love the ice luminaria that you made. This is an article on some really unique ones that are sure to give your creative juices a boost. Look it up. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/homegarden/2008540416_zhom20luminariabhg.html The four photos on the side really made me want to give it a try, but I lost my opportunity. :-? Of course then I want to see want you come up with.
Thank you all for liking the lantern bowl. Sorry to tell you that the ice is now melting fast. We've got +6°C/45F outside now, and lots of wind, so I guess I'll just go fly a kite. Jewell, thanks for the link. I was thinking along those lines, making cylinders with candles inside. The few blooms I've got inside are too cherished to be frozen.
