Male pileated woodpecker.

    Have had the female calling for a few years now, she has even brought young ones for the food that I put out for her the last three years. Yesterday the male came for the first time and made a few return trips. This is the male.

    WOW! That is such a large bird. I could hug that thing forever. :D :D

    Lucky you.....

    I even grow mealworms in my pantry for them in the Winter just in case they eat them in suit. I tell everyone they are for the blue birds in the Summer but we all know better than that....:eek:

    It is the largest woodpecker we have up here. I now get the male and females of four species of woodpeckers now.

    I saw my second Pileated Woodpecker a couple of weeks ago but never got close enough to get a good picture. Magnificent bird!!

    Woodpeckers fascinate me and I love to watch our Great Spotted hammering on dead wood. I used to worry, as a child, that they would give themselves headaches. :oops:
