I found her on a table outside the Whole Foods Market we went to yesterday morning. Came home and searched out some information on her and decided that I really needed to bring her home with me so we went back up there last night. I picked out the pot with 5 stems, only one bloom so far but it is a summer bloomer so there is plenty of time. I need to put it in a bigger pot, it is only a hardy perennial in zones 9,10,11 so the pot will be put in the bloom house over the winter. It has no fragrance, the name comes from the shape of the bloom. When it is in full bloom it will be covered with small white flowers. There are about 7 other colors but this is the first of any of them I have seen down here. I forgot to add the botanical name.... Eucomis comosa 'Tugela Jade'
There are some plants that are so attractive that they really don't need to have a scent and your new one is most definately a lovely thing Toni. You must show us photographs when it blooms for you.
Ooo, ooo, I have these in my garden. They are hardy enough over here so mine live in pots outdoors all year round. I started with a couple of bulbs a few years ago, but they grow so easily from seed that now I had lots of pots full. The blooms on mine are just coming - I shall try to remember to take a piccy. They are lovely and look so exotic.
What an exotic-looking thing! Please send more fotos when there are more blooms. Take good care of her this winter. A good deal, price-wise too.
For the rest of this growing season I am going to transplant her to a larger pot and set her out back where the other lilies are now finishing up their season. I'm going to do an experiment over this winter, a couple of the divisions are going into the ground this fall, the rest will stay in the pot in the bloom house during the winter and we will see which one comes back in the spring. I hope mine do as well outside as your do EJ. Sjoerd, I looked at several of the pots and most only had one or two stems but this one with 5 made the price really good at $2 each
