If I could have a larger place to live again, I am not sure if I would take it. Now that we are downsized and have spent so much time and money here...I think I will stay. I lived in the country...and believe me I loved it. All except the pine snakes and the grass snakes. To be bending down in your flower garden and hear a noise and look up and see something staring at you.....YIKES. One day I had seen over 7 of them and I told my husband I was going in because I couldn't handle any more. We could see Mosquito Hill, a Nature Preserve in New London, Wisconsin from our front yard and it was a gorgeous view. I always called it our little bit of heaven. I will never forget the 9 years we lived there, all the fantastic views of nature. I remember a day that we had over a hundred dragon flys soaring, ok flying over our heads,it was unbelievable . A site to remember... The birds were fantastic. We had many varieties but my favorite is the cardinals. In the snow we could count 5 pairs and they looked so magnificent with the red feathers glistening in the snow. I think one day we had counted at least 12 varieties of birds. I wish I could find that list...every color you could think of. The pileated woodpecker was great too. The first day I saw it, I thought it looked like a chicken flying in the sky.I went and looked him up in the bird book right away.. On one of our days enjoying nature we had gotten an idea from a bird magazine and thought we would give it a try. So we put a ladder by the hummingbird feeder and put a flower blossom in our mouths. It didn't take very long before a hummingbird came and tried for the nectar in our flowers. It was so much fun...Enjoy nature to the fullest...
Memories of Country Living.... Sherry8 - what wonderful memories you have of your former residence. So many birds and critters. Here in Southern Calif. I feel lucky just to see a opossum or toad in my yard. That idea of the flower blossom and the humming bird was great - I'll have to try that one as we do get quite a few in this area. Thanks for sharing. :-D
You paint such a wonderful picture of where you used to live Sherry. It must have been a hard decision for you to down size and move away from all that natural beauty. I hope you have found many different species in your present garden, excluding snakes of course, and have begun a new list of visiting birds.
You had a wonderful place for 9 years and you have your memories as I do.You can make new memories at this new place now and enjoy it too.
Thanks for sharing your memories Sherry. Those are just the kind of memories I wanted to make when I moved to the country. I'll have to try that Hummingbird trick!
Those are wonderful memories Sherry. I love the country style of living an can honestly say i don't want any other. Like your memories remind you of all the wildlife that is there. That can't compete with concrete sidewalks, an smog air. just my opinion tho. an thank you so much for sharing your memories.
I still live in the country on my 3 acres. I have left most of it grow up naturally. Because of that, I see deer in my front yard at least once a week, sometimes daily. The squirrls run wild in the yard and pester the many birds. The other day under the bird feeder it looked like the ground was moving. It was just the 30 or 40 Goldfinch in their winter plumage eating the seed that other birds had spilled. The racoons try to terrorize me, but I do enjoy seeing them, especially the little ones. I wouldn't change any of it. Not many snakes here, once in a while I'll see a garter snake in the yard.
Capt Kirk....we too lived on 3 acres.. The walks in the woods with the dogs was so refreshing. I don't think I missed a day...we even walked through the deep snow in the winter.. The first picture was from the woods. I had hostas planted along the path. not very pretty in the fall with all the dry leaves but once the snow fell, it was beautiful again..
Now that's my dream. I've been looking at places around the country, a few wooded acres (I get so tired of mowing 5 acres!), a little house, all wood walls & floors, stone fireplace, a little outbuilding I could turn into an art studio (tho I love the one I have now), and absolutely, positively a big ol' porch. And I'd garden all with ferns, violets, and whatever is native to the woods where we wind up. I'd shrivel up and blow away if I had to live in the city!!
