I want to share this thought with all my friend here. Theirs a nasty storm going on outside, wind and cold and blowing rain/snow. I am wondering if any of you dedicated Gardeners remember loved ones with flower associations? When I think of my grandfather I think of Giant Peonies he had may and loved them all, he was so proud of his single petal climbing white rose and his hedge of yellow roses. My Dad loved heavenly blue Morning Glory and Bright little Marigolds. Von [my step dad] It was Daylilies and Lilies of any kind, He passed away last year on 12/29. I went to the house and rescued all I could, so I now have many lilies and I don't know the name of a single one. Mother ??? she was not a plant lover but I remember her teaching me how to make Hollyhock dolls using tooth picks. It was so much fun I passed this on to my girls as well. My brother Gary [killed in Nam 1969] Loved Yellow Roses the bright color and the wonderful smell he said made him remember "HOME" and all the thing that go with being Home. My Sister Becky [Died of a drug overdose] Maiden pinks and trumpet vines she gave me tons of magic Lilies, every August when they bloom I thin of her. The Yellow Rose hedge out back came from Gramp's garden. these are for gramps and Gary. All around me I have reminder of those that have passed. Each one in the form of a Flower, Makes me feel all warm an fuzzy inside, Like each one lives on in my Garden. Hugs to all of you here and warm Holiday wishes! moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic moderator's note: moved topic to more appropriate forum
I always associate Snow in Summer with my maternal grandmother as she had it growing around her front door. My mother - it was lilac that was a favourite of hers while my father's was yellow roses.
Neither of my parents were much on gardening. My grandmother was a gardener. I always associate the yellow forsythia bush with my childhood as we had one in the front yard at our house. However I do remember some switches coming off of that bush also! My grandmother had a lovely pinkish white rose bush in the back yard along the fence. I mostly think of her when I see Cherry trees, grape vines, and squash plants! I think of my sister when I plant gladiolas because she grew them along side the carport of the new house we moved into when we were preteens and I remember how it made the new place feel more like home. Rose bushes and the wildflower seed mix make me think of my brother as these are things that he has taken an interest in as he has gotten older. Usually buys our Mom a rose bush every year or so for Mother's Day. This past year it was the Queen Elizabeth rose.
My Grandmother always had African Violets on the kitchen windowsills, so I was thrilled when the one I had finally bloomed like crazy this past summer. The only gardening my Mom did was plant Daisies around the base of the tree in the front yard and she likes yellow Roses. I have plans for both in the front garden next year. I don't remember my Dad ever mentioning a favorite flower, I'll have to ask Mom.
I remember my mom always having the Purple Fuschia potted plant on the porch.. her love. There were roses all aroung the house but I have no idea who did that . Now my sister who passed on april 1, 2009...Brought mw my first Lily.. It was from Ohio. I told her I hate lilys .. Ha ha . GUess what my beds are full of in the spring. Wow are they elegant. When we first got married, I could not afford plants, but told everyone I operated a hospital for sick plants.. And they were only too glad to give me them..LOL b
Since my grandparents did lots of gardening I've got plenty of different flowers and veggies around me that bring back memories of them. You're right, it brings out that warm, fuzzy feeling.
