Has anybody tried micro-propagation of Bamboo? Not too far away is a large Moso Bamboo forest on Avery Island, Louisiana. I would love to clone some for my garden. I am about to experiment with it, but I do not want to spend much. Yesterday I bought a couple of clear canning jars from Dollar Tree. Grow Media: I am going to try to make my own grow media. I am planning on using a cup of nitrite rich aquarium water. Add two tsp. (10ml) sugar and a packet of unflavored gelatin. Sterilize Media: I will just pour the media into the jars and put them in my pressure cooker, then seal. Propagation: I will flame sterilize a scalpel and cut a few cells out of a test plant. I read I could sanitize the cells in a mild bleach solution and rinse in purified water. Then place the cells in the gelled grow media with flame sterilized tweezers. Then seal it up and put in a warm place with indirect sun light. Has anybody here done this before?
Paw--This experiment seems to working great. I can appreciate what you have done and I find it remarkable. Chapeau.
I'll say! I am impressed that you know how to do this and have done it successfully. BTW, why are you doing this? Is it a rare kind of bamboo or is it rather that you are experimenting with micro-propagation techniques and the bamboo was a good subject to experiment with? I ask because I have spent beaucoups of time trying to rid my property of two different bamboos! Propagating them is certainly not on my list!
I am going to try micro-propagation with cut roses tomorrow evening. At lunch today I am going to the grocery store to get a few rose clipping to try to micro-propagate them. I will try to remember take pictures. I may change the procedure just a tad.
