I picked up this plant recently off the mark-down rack. Was labeled Calla. Since I've been struggling with a Calla from one of my aunts, I figured I'd get this one as a "back up".
Well... just after a few days it was showing signs of blooming. But... not a Calla at all, but a Canna. I was disappointed... I have several Cannas already. But oh well... it was already planted. Might as well see what it does.

You can see here, it's still pretty small. Probably no more than 8-10 inches tall.
    And here's the first bloom.

What a beauty! I've never seen one with that coloring. Now I'm not so disappointed.
(Although it will have to be moved eventually... wrong spot.)
Is this one just an early bloomer? Or do Canna's really come and stay that small?

It is getting more and more likely that the label on plants at the big box garden centers are wrong. I found a large Passionflower vine labeled only as Foliage recently.
I don't know where the misnaming them Canna Lily came from, they are not even in the Lily family.

A Canna that has been grown in a pot will stay very small. The smallest I have found any info on is 2-3 feet so yours will probably like it in the ground and grow to the size it supposed to be maybe by the end of the growing season or at least when it comes back next summer.

That color is really bright and fits the heat around here doesn't it?

WOW what a gorgeous colour. I agree with Toni that once it's in the ground it should grow bigger. However, no matter what size it is it's a real beauty. Yet another bargain that has found a good home with you Cheryl. :-D

I'd be thrilled if it stayed this size, that way I could maybe leave it where it is (the front flower bed with the Texas Star and BIG Orange Canna). But if it's going to get big, I'm afraid I'll have to move it.
So... guess I'll just enjoy it until it tells me where it wants to live.
