Last fall I took cuttings from the old rose at the church up the road and ended up with three nice little rooted cuttings. I babied them, watched over them, and finally put them out, still in pots, for the summer. During one day, just 5-6 hours, grasshoppers ATE one of my roses down to a stub. I was crushed, so unhappy because that one had bloomed twice and was the largest. I moved it back to the potting area in the barn, gave it a mild dose of manure, and watered the remaining little stem. It's growing! We now have two green stems with leaves. It's a miracle rose--appropriate, seeing where it came from. Now I sit out in the potting area with my shotgun, waiting for the first 'hopper to show up!
I hate it when a favourite plant of mine gets eaten. I'm really pleased that your rose is growing again for you. Fingers crossed the grasshoppers have moved on now and will leave it alone.
It just goes to show you the plant's will to survive despite adversity. They are remarkable and quite often surprise you. I have not seen a hopper in years and it's nice to keep it that way. Jerry
So sorry to hear about that rose disaster... darn grasshoppers. YUCK! Thrilled to hear of it's recovery. I pity the grasshopper that gets anywhere near another of your roses!
Yessssssss another rose survived,..i am well pleased for you,..still i can imagine the let down when you spotted it eaten down to the stump,..miracle rose is right!.
