I was given a beautiful Mock Orange bush as a gift 2 or 3 summers ago. It has grown beautifully and smells so good in the springtime! I cut back some of the older branches after it finished blooming this spring. There are some that need to be cut now but I'm afraid any pruning might keep it from blooming next spring. These branches have gone crazy, must be 12 - 15 feet tall!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Deanna

I do know that spring blooming trees and shrubs are supposed to be pruned right after they finish flowering. If you wait this late you will loose next years blooms bc they have already set them. I also know that if it is the same thing I am thinking of they will become climbers if not pruned. There is a place on the Amite River here where it has taken over the trees, a very beautiful site in the spring. If you do not want to risk loosing next years flowers, then I would wait to prune.

*filing away for future reference* I would like to add a mock orange or two to my yard, they are so fragrant. Good to know when to whack 'em back.

Thanks for the link Eileen! I think Sharon is right, I'm going to wait. If my shrub looks a little wild and crazy so be it! :) I'd rather have blooms next year than a neat flowerbed this year :D Prim, you can't go wrong with a mock orange. There are so many different kinds!! Mine is a Minnesota Snowflake (I think) it has really perfumey double blooms and is huge. I bought a dwarf, single blossom variety for my little old neighbor lady. We'll see how it performs next year.
    Thanks y'all
