I think I will be planting more Asiatic Lilies for next year, these babies are just so beautiful and photogenic. There are a few more buds that will open within a couple of days, best I can tell they will be either white or purple. I planted a bag of mixed colors so their colors are all a surprise. I bought one plant from a local pet shop 4-5 years ago, they sell fish for ponds and indoor tanks along with dog and cat supplies. That one plant has multiplied so much I now have them in two large tubs. One bloom last year and this is the first of two so far this year. ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden )
Yeah, they are gorgeous, Toni, and almost like they know how to "pose!" You all inspire me to try new things. Is your water iris in a pond or a tub or some other kinda thing?
Thanks Daisybeans, the Water Iris bulbs are planted in an old stew pot, similar to the GS logo then sitting in a plastic half barrel that I bought at Dollar General. I have two Water Lilies, one in an old ceramic mixing bowl and one in a glass punch bowl and another water plant of unknown name in a ceramic planter.
I am drooling over those lilies, and the iris is undescribably lovely! It looks like something you've stitched up from left-over velvet fabric.
Oh Toni! After I saw this post of yours this a.m. I was at the nursery and they had so many pretty water plants! I immediately was thinking of your post and wondered how you did it. The pots they are in (the stew pot and ceramic bowl) do not have any holes? Then completely submerged in the larger barrel that also has no holes? So do you have to change the water, ever? Or keep it circulating by another means? And do you have trouble with mosquitos from the water? (I have terrible mosquito issues... Sorry so many questions. I just got so excited!
Those are gorgeous, Toni. I'm hoping to start a water feature to my garden one day. Those water Iris are just a beautiful color. You have wonderful ideas for inexpensive gardening which is my favorite kind.
None of the pots have holes. The plants are each in a small pot with dirt, then I submerge that pot in the larger pot filled with water. The water Iris multiply just as quickly as regular garden Iris, I had to divide them last fall. I need to repot the Water Lilies soon, they are outgrowing their pots. I clean out the pots every fall but basically leave the plants in water all year round. I sprinkle a product called Mosquito Bits in the water every few days, plus the birds are always drinking from the pots so they help keep any larvae under control. You can also use Mosquito Dunks like you would use in a large pond but I like the sprinkles since some of the pots are small.
