OK now we move on to the living quarters of the house in Thirsk. I thought you'd all like to see some of the things that were being used on a daily basis back in those 'good old days'!!! Do you recognise anything? Dining room: Storage cupboards: Washing machine: Baby pram. Anyone for cake?: I adults weekly rations: Wartime Christmas decorations: Just some of the languages that the James Herriot books were published in: After seeing around the museum we went for a late lunch and then back to the hotel for a rest. At night we visited Saltwell Park in Gateshead where they had a Christmas Festival walk in the woods. Here's a link with photographs of what we saw: http://www.journallive.co.uk/videos-pic ... 404336/i7/ Just click on the right hand arrow to see all the photographs We spent around two hours drinking in the wonderful lit displays and then, tired and cold, we returned to our hotel for a hot drink before bed. A really lovely week-end with nothing to do but enjoy ourselves.
The Glass tree decorations are the same as some I have that go on our tree they were my nanas and have been passed down to me, they get put on and taken off and stored very gently as they are so fragile, My nana also had a mangle which I remember her using a lot and the hanging clothes rack above her kitchen and above her living room near the fire.
It does take you back a ways doesn't it?I notice so many things that I do get home sick to see one more time.
More good pics. You did such a good job that I almost feel as though I visited it myself. Thanks again.
I love that kitchen!!! I could feel right at home there. We had some of the christmas decorations when I was little, but my Mom replaced them with newer more modern ones as they could afford them. I would love to have some of them now.
I'm so glad that people have had the wits to save some of the old stuff for us to enjoy and show to our children.
I have glass ornaments that were passed down to me, they are some of the most precious Christmas ornaments we have on our tree today. I loved the pictures, thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Great memories Eileen, especially the old washing machine with mangle which I remember my Mum using when I was very young. Saltwell Park looks a magical place, lovely photos. What a great birthday surprise
All I can say is that I am glad that I never had to use a wringer wash machine...wow...too much work. I guess we are all spoiled now with all the newer models...Sherry
My granddaddy had some ornaments similar, as did we, when I was a young girl. Also we had a wringer washer when I was about 5. Was trying to help my mother and got my arm pulled into the wringer up to my shoulder. Don't remember how I got it out, but she didn't let me help her anymore!! There are a lot of things on the yellow shelves that I recognize. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. And glad you enjoyed your trip.
