Can you stand another sunset? Dan took these the other night when he was coming over. He also took the moon picture but he converted it to black and white. Same sunset, different angles. Dooley

I can remember distinctly a beautiful sunset in Malta not unlike that one Dooley. I'll always remember it, stunning.

One question: how in the heck did Dan manage to take that moon photo?

You said the magic word Dooley - SUNSET!!! :-D Can you ask DR if I'm allowed to pinch the first three please for my collection?

That moon shot is terrific too - how did he manage to get such a fantastic shot of the moon?

Hi, everybody. Told my mom (Dooley) I'd register and answer the questions about my photos.

    Gardenstew

The moon pic was taken with a Canon Powershot S3 IS, at full 12x zoom (equivalent of a 432mm lens), spot metering on the moon so as not to overexpose it. I set the camera in shutter speed priority (tv mode) then manually adjusted shutter speed until the camera set an aperture of f/5.6 (which gave a shutter speed of 1/600th of a second). Due to the truly superior image stabilization system of the S3, no tripod was needed for the shot. I just braced the camera against something solid. I then did a full size crop on the computer to cut out most of the black sky. I have this moon shot as a 1024x768 wallpaper if anyone wants it.

Here's a moon shot from the night of the full moon. The moon was purposely overexposed so as to allow the clouds to show up in the frame.

Glad you joined us Dan, as Glenda said above we have heard lots about you :D And thanks for the detailed explanation about how you achieved the moon shot - it's fantastic. It really looks as if you needed a telescope involved somewhere but no. I have heard only great things about the Canon Powershot cameras. Maybe I should add it to my Xmas list :smt114

Welcome again, I hope you can become a regular. Your photography knowledge would definitely be an asset to the community!

I shoot a Canon eos d20 and love it. Never tried a moon shot tho. Yours is truly a masterpiece.
