Look what I found growing in my woodland garden! Black morels. What a surprise! Several nice big ones too ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) The greater part of this bed had the morels sprinkled throughout with a variety of sizes. It looked like the squirrels or rodents had already found some of them. That explained why Buddy our cat was hanging out on the bench in that area. Most of bed had them ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) I covered them in a couple of layers of netting to try and keep varmits out and let the morels multiple. I'll be on the look out for them again in the fall. Bed filled with varying sized morels ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden )
I've only ever has ONE black morel appear in the garden. I'd love to have as many as you have. I will keep my fingers crossed that they will indeed multiply for you as they are so expensive to buy and can be used in many different ways.
Not being a mushroom person, I guess everyones excitement must mean that they taste good? Cure rare diseases? Have hallucinogenic properties? Jerry
I was informed that they are the tan morels which are supposedly even better? Jerry, Morels are supposed to be a high quality eating mushroom. At the farmers market they go for around $20 a pound. Retail $45 a pound. That's fresh. I've never had them, but my son the chef was excited to come over and cook some up tomorrow. We'll cook up some steak to go with it. Chanterelles are more affordable and in the local markets in season. After tomorrow I'll know what the fuss is about, or not. Sidenote: No hallucinogenic mushrooms on the lot that I know of, no cow manure, since i compost. If you ever see young people or old hippies out in the cow pastures walking around staring at the ground during the spring or fall you can bet their looking for the 'funny' shrooms. In the 70's California vans used to come up during the spring rainy season. lol
Cute cute, but the way they look, if I ever found them in my path (while looking for "edible" ones) I'd pass them by... they don't fit in my idea of "edible" Or my mom's - cause she's the one cooking the mushrooms we pick.
When I was a kid, we used to go to the woods every spring looking for Morels. Some years we would get a couple of grocery bags full. I remember one year a pheasant came flying into the edge of the woods and was too low and wrung his own neck on the fence. We had pheasant under Morels for supper that night!
