I was wondering... I have some Hardy White Evergreen bunching onions. They are sooo mild. But they were bred to be big and cold tolerant, and when I purchased the seeds, I wanted something that could provide even in the cold. The scallions I buy from Whole Foods make my eyes tear, cutting them. They are also relatively non-bulbing. They smell stronger than the ones I grow. And the wild onions in the yard stink! They are really the strongest, and until recently, I cut them because I thought they were inedible!! Does anyone know of any chives (the smaller kind) or scallions that have a strong aroma and taste? Please provide the name of the variety.
Taste and aroma are subjective. What one person feels is strong in taste or aroma, someone else would consider to be mild or unnoticeable. You might try some veggie seed online sites to see how they rate different ones. Or try different varieties from your area. Either way, it sounds like you have a growing and tasting adventure ahead of you.
I agree with everyone, go and get a bunch of different ones of all 3 and grow them in small pots until you find the ones you really like. My green onions I really liked would smell up the entire outside of my house when I cut them.
