Has anyone used a motion activated sprinkler? I'm having a problem with people helping themselves to my apples. Now I don't mind people grabbing an apple or two to snack on or take home. But using a rake to whack them out of my tree and filling buckets? What about the kids who grab them to have apple fights or fire them at our house? Um, lets see. Who pays a gardener to come in and prune them every year? Who buys fruit spikes and puts them in the ground? Who pays the utility bill to water them? We put up a fence between the road and the house and the apple trees are on the other side of the fence, though most of the branches are evenly distributed on both sides of the fence. I want to set up a motion activated sprinkler on our side of the fence, far enough away that no one would be able to steal it but would get shot with water if they step off the street onto our lawn and approach the trees. The reason the apple trees aren't fenced in is the property line and existing fence made it more sense to continue the fenceline rather than jutting out at weird angles, though that's not out of the question. I can put a motion sprinkler on a tripod or ledge closer to the house - about 15 feet from the trees. I'm just wondering what people recommend. Finding branches all over my lawn from disrespectful people is annoying.

Have you tried putting a sign on the fence whistler? Because the tree's are on the other side of the fence people might not realize they are your trees. If that doesn't work, I'd go with the sprinklers ;)

No sign on the fence. We have young people wandering the neighborhood at all hours due to a party house in the vicinity. They enjoy relocating for sale signs, garage sale signs, etc. There's no doubt the apple trees are ours. We live on a corner lot with 2 street fronts. Our next door neighbor lives on the far side of our house, opposite from the trees and around the corner. Our yard goes back 200 feet and the next door neighbor on the side street is a couple of hundred feet from the trees. We have a fence and cedar hedge. They don't. Our driveway is 5 feet from the closest tree. Next door neighbor's driveway is about 250 feet from the other tree. I can reach out my bedroom window and pick apples off the gravensteen. A local nursery has one of those scarecrow sprinklers. I'm going to check it out and although pricey I think if I can attach it to our house it should work.
