Warning! Long post! Even from my teens in the fifties I refused to "pigeonhole" myself when it came to music. I could never understand why a lot of young people did that. I guess my earliest influences were what was on the radio and the big band 78s an aunt had left her by her American flyer boyfriend during WW2. So I'd listen to the likes of The Everley Brothers, Boddy Holly and other American groups. I had no time then or even now for the British "copyists," the likes if Cliff Richard etc., I also like Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, etc., At the same time I was going to local jazz clubs, listening to "traditional jazz." In 1956 whilst I was still at school a friend and I saw Louis Armstrong at the Empress Hall in London. I then got into modern jazz. At nineteen my future wife and I joined Ronnie Scott's first club. We'd just moved into a flat in Soho together. We were often in there mid-week as it was free to members on those days and warmer than our flat. In the sixties I also started listening to Motown. I've a lot of albums from the eras that followed. Carole King, The Eagles,Earth Wind & Fire, ELO, Fleetwood Mac, etc., as well as building up a collection of jazz CDs. When I retired, I bought a couple of vinyl jukeboxes over ten years ago. I started buying 45s from different eras I liked.. This one has sixty 50/60/70/80s favourites, ten Doo-Wop and ten Standards. Really did enjoy reading about your music history. I like to listen to any music and was actually brought up on Cliff Richards music and my Sister was into Elvis Presley so we were very competitive with our chosen Singer. Not that it stopped me moving on, far from it. My late friend and I worked in Saville Row for the Forestry Commission so it was necessary for us to have train passes. That enabled us at weekends to join in all the fabulous music of the times visiting the London scene. Most remembered occasion was The Who appearing at maybe the Marquee or the 100 Club, it was so crowded and the volume was as loud as it could possibly be in there.. and my friend passed out which was scary at the time... I can remember when and how we got our first record player...my late Dad said if we were to give up our comics he would get us one..deal made.. We went to Ronnie Scott's a few times although got into Jazz. Enjoyed your video immensely and loved the Juke Boxes, never seen those smaller ones before...Sun's out so will wrap up well as the wind is harsh and do a little in the Garden before the next shower...
Thanks for that. The wall boxes which you sometimes see at the end of diner booth tables in fifties films, would originally be connected to a parent jukebox. The jukeboxes provide me with "gardening music" in the summer. In the winter I cover them with insulation and keep a couple of 60w inspection lamps in the bottom of their cabinets, to keep them reasonably warm and dry. But I play them a few times every other day during the winter as use is the best form of "preventative maintenance." My little camera doesn't do the sound from their two 12" and two 8" speakers justice.
There's me listen to youtube via my ipod earphones.....I do have separates by the old Sony well over 20+ years old and works as it always did....except need a new needle for the deck. Not the tidiest set up, it but happy with it mostly.. as straight forward I bought the old organ for about £70..glimpse only.. from a Charity Shop in Hastings as it reminded me so much of my late Dad..The records have been piled in a cupboard in a spare room even though there are some collectables amongst them....shame I know that...Have lots of CD's and play some everyday at some point... also an amateur radio set up on the shelve below..we are both hams..
I had a friend from my teenage years who died a couple of years ago who was in to ham radio. He also had a rotating dish on his roof so he could pirate TV channels from all round the world. The "officionados" would suggest you should store your albums vertically to stop them warping. My hi-fi gear dates from the seventies, it's all in perfect working condition but I have changed the belts on the cassette deck and turntable a couple of times. My Tyros is "all singing and dancing" and has wi-fi. I don't play it a lot, but I occasionally record stuff and post it on a dedicated Yamaha keyboard players' message board. There must be a coupole of hundred I've posted of all genres. I'll play anything that takes my fancy. Modern keyboards come with various introductions you can use, lots of styles and instruments. You can have three different ones for the right hand and an "add on" for the left of your choice, but then you're on your own. Well I play guitar quite badly but still enjoy it, so what the heck...My late Dad was musical and a good artist likewise my Sister plays the guitar well and married the Guitar Teacher....onboard tuition....she is also a great Artist. Past me by those skills...Love music though, without a doubt it plays a big part in my life.
I used to be into art, it was one of my "rabbit keeping" subjects at school, I had a GCE pass in it. I must have painted this forty years ago from a photo. My wife still likes it so it's on the wall on the landing. I've a few others in cupboard somewhere. I used to play guitar in a jazz band when I was school but changed to electric piano in my early thirties. My wife is into decoupage card and costume jewellery making.
That is a good picture you have painted, My late Dad only started when he became ill, actually started with painting by numbers as he had no idea what he would achieve in a matter of weeks.... I have a few more Cat Paintings but have no access sadly since my Dad passed away.. to the bulk of his paintings. But I do have memories of them. I have no idea what my Sister paints, but I know she does sell her work through those little art studios they have in Blighty....Ces't la vie... Some of your gear I did not know anything about but can go back and do a search at leisure as always interested to learn stuff...
Nice paintings, good compositions. I made this video of my cassette recorder/player, I bought around 1976, when on another board we were discussing vintage audio equipment. It's still in perfect working order. You can never say that about modern equipment, I'm on my third laptop in four years. This 1960s Rotel tuner/amp I bought earlier this year, it's in excellent condition. I'm here using the tiny speakers in a vintage jukebox wall box, in my "office," alright our box bedroom. I use it to play mp3s on my laptop. I previously was using a little amplifier. I've since bought some bookshelf speakers which has improved the performance no end. But I had to do a bit of "fettling" with the wall unit to get them in the shelf wasn't wide enough, I'd added it before I decided to get new speakers, so had to buy a longer bit of laminated chipboard.. I also added some LED lamps under it. I managed to hide all the wires. I've a thing about exposed wires, I put them all in white plastic trunking and where possible fix it to skirting boards.
