Last year every time I visited a nursery or garden center I came home with a new sempervivum. We usually call them hens and chicks.

    Green in the summer.

Red in the winter. (Over the hood of the car)

I planted some in a garden spot one year and they disappeared. I wonder if they left town? What happens after they turn red? Do they continue to grow larger or do they die and are they survived by the chicks?

P.S. I really suspect the weed patrol got them.

i love hens & chicks....very carefree & low maintenance......auntie next door leaves them on her back steps in pots all year....they always survive the winters without any thought! :stew2:

Those are beautiful Don, nice collection.
I have been thinking about getting several this year to see if they like our summers better than other succulents I had last year did.

Jerry, first ones I had several years ago kept getting dragged away by a squirrel. I caught him at it a few times then one day they were all gone and I never saw them again. Guess the squirrel ate them?

Nice collection, Don, and there are worse addictions (try roses!).
Toni, hens and chicks do great here in Central Texas. I planted some around a stump, and they stay a hue of green all year long--greener in spring and fall, gray-green in summer and winter. It may be the variety, though. Ours need little water, fortunately.
