I was trimming the Dragon Lady Crossvine week before last and decided to try rooting it in water just to see if it would. I have since learned that they root best in a pot of rooting mix or potting soil. I need one to cover a trellis out front next year and maybe to cover the fence we are going to put up. Anyway, I got sidetracked..... it hasn't rooted and it has been in a bottle of water instead of soil, but early last week I noticed a teeny, tiny bud the size of a 'seed bead' had formed and then by Sunday there was this large bud.... This morning it has started opening up. Since it is an evergreen vine I think I will root several pieces for the fence out front to give me a year round privacy screen.
Such a lovely surprise! An evergreen privacy screen is a must around here, I think nearly everybody has one.
I had sort of a 'DUH' moment while I was getting this post ready. I have been trying to come up with something to plant out front along the fence that would be green in the winter to hide dormant garden, especially since I am talking about the front yard. The answer to my problem has been hanging on a trellis out in the back yard all this time. I am ordering the fence panels next weekend, Randy and Kenny get to install them SOOOOOON!!! I hope
Hiyah Toni--- Whether you root it in rooting soil, along the side of the pot, or continue trying to get it to root in water, I believe that you would have a better chance for success if you removed all the flower buds and blooms as well as cut off the distal tip of the vine. That way the plant can concentrate on forming roots only. It's just an idea. Good luck...and let us see your plant once it gets roots and establishes itself.
That is a really nice vine. I have been looking for something to put on my trellis under the front porch for some time now. I have not been able to find anything that would stand summer and winter. I am going to see if I can get one of these and start it off.
