I thought seeing as my mom never gets time to come on here I would post a few pics of her gardens colour. I am staying looking after her dog, Robbie while she has a couple of days away. This is her Acer she got it a couple of years ago from an offer in the Daily Mail newspaper and I think it is absolutely gorgeous, we bought one this year but as yet it isnt looking that good, I think it just eneds to get established. Mums Acer ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) The next one is my Mums old wheelbarrow that she plants up and I think it looks lovely, the heather is a new addition and has erracacious (sp) compost around it as she has not had much luck with heathers before and was reccomended to try that. Moms wheelbarrow ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) This is just a little pot of her winter Pansys, everywhere you look in her garden there is colour, she recently planted all her autumn and winter annuals to brighten up the garden, I love pansy's! winter pansy's ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) This is a monster! it is some nasturtiums the birds planted or the wind planted and it is so beautiful the colours are lovely and the variagated leaves, there are a few patches of it in the garden but this one is the biggest, behind it is a potato planter bag for an idea of the size. Mums nasturtiums ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) My garden seems to have shut down for the year so I really love being in my families gardens and enjoying them, I cant afford to buy new plants just now so its extra nice to share my Mums and My father in Laws.
Those were such a pleasure to see, Playtime. Your mum seems to have the touch with plants, doesn't she? You know, I don't find that Acer looking anything but good. Of course it will need time to settle-in, but for the cycle that it's in, it seems to be doing just fine. Now....what about that wheelbarrow! THat is looking good now, but just wait--it is going to look even better. A big "well done" to her. You are a lucky one to have such nice gardens to visit and enjoy. Thanks so much for the pics.
Thanks Sjoerd, Yes she sure does have the way with Plants! It is our Acer at home that is looking rather miserable, my Mums is great just a bit of windburn on the tips of the leaves but come spring it will throw up new leaves and look great again, It has grown so well since she got it. I am very lucky being able to enjoy such lovely gardens as our back yard is postage stamp size LOL but for now its best for me as I cant do an awful lot at once and I am sure the pots are enough for me.
Oooh, lovely! I adore the nasturtium. That heather your mother has planted, I wonder if it's the ones we use as autumn colour to be discarded in winter or spring. They're lovely heathers when they bloom.
I'm a real acer lover and I love the one your mum has playtime. I think we can safely say she has green fingers!!
Thanks everyone for your kind words, Yes my mom definately has got green fingers! We got her a plant arrangement for a gift to present at our wedding and that will be 3 years in May and it is absolutely thriving she has it in her bathroom and it has grown so much, we only got it from B and Q. The nasturtiums are a pleasure and isn't it always great to get surprises deposited by the birds! she had a huge sunflower growing out of a pot with her rose a few weeks ago that the birds had sown!
Thanks Frank and Kuntrygal, I love the wheelbarrow too its just got a bit of character. I am home again now looking out the window at a wind battered back yard with my plants all looking rather sad! I do have some Dahlias trying to stand up to the wind !
Thinking about your dahlias, Playtime, makes me think of how gardens teach me so much about resilience! But back to your mum's garden -- I was especially taken by the bed around the Acer. Such a pretty tree. Is the tree growing IN the pot? Or just behind? I like the rocks around the plants there too.
The Acer is actually in the pot but the roots are coming out of the bottom and into the stones there, but it seems quite happy as it is. The reason that she ended up with rocks and pots was there was a big old tree stump there and you cant dig into the ground at all for roots, the house and garden is built where a wood used to be and very close to a small wood ( literally about 100 yards) so the whole back garden is a tangle of roots, its very difficult to do anything in the ground there.
