I stopped at my neighbors house to look at a plant of his and ended up buying a new fern. It is so cool, i couldn't pass it up. This guy has the coolest and most unusual variety of shade plants I have ever seen. it is a variety of a Lady Fern.

Has anyone seen one? I never have, so I wanted to share it with you.

Hi Philip, I don't have many ferns, I hardly have any shade here. The few I have Is a very small spot in my flower bed. I have a fern I snagged from my grandmothers house before my dad sold it. I have no idea what it is, probably just something she moved out of the woods to her house.

A japanese painted fern. I am surprised it is still here. since my husband dug throught that bed in the fall to put me in a frost hydrant out in the garden.

Another unknown fern to me. It came out of the woods behind my house.

Since it is so cold and wet out today I'm not sure if I'll get out there to finish. I HATE being wet and cold.

Ohhhhh,..cold and wet,..we had a few of those days of late,..but no matter what i do in the house i want to be outside.

Look after your Ferns!,..i was shocked to see the prices they are being sold for here in the garden centers!,..but of course i never bought any,..a trip on the lake to any of the many islands proves worth while,..they take over the place here so to rescue some for the garden is a bonus.

This link may be of use to you to identify your Fern.

At least you know the Leather one,..and the Painted Fern.

I know i have two Lobed Maidenhair, Asplenium csirii growing on my wall,..and an Ostrich Fern,Matteuccia struthiopteris,..plus some Heart Tongue Fern,Phyllitis sccolopendrium,..as for the others?,..yikes they look so similar.

I thought the price was reasonable. This man started dividing and selling his extras as he was cleaning up his beds several years ago. He retired from being an art teacher and now fills his time going to flea markets and plant sales, aquiring new specimens and selling his extras. he has some really unusual plants. I saw a varigated lenten rose, today, and a "checkered or patterned" shred leaf umbrella plant.
As for the "grandma's" fern, maybe someone on here will know what it is. After a while of looking at the pictures in the book they all start looking alike.

Philip, that is a wonderful site, I could spend a lot of time there just looking at the pictures, but it wouldn't get me any closer to identifying mine. There are a lot I would love to have just to see them growing in the woods.

I got a deal then. I only paid $6.00 for mine, Yahoo!!! I think I'll go back and get something else now. Since I posted the pictures earlier, I have cut down and removed all the birdnest and alberta spruces from my landscaping. Another big YAHOO!!! They were beginning to get over grown, I had to walk out into the lawn to see around them, so it was time for them to go. Now I'll have more room for a few more shade plants. Good thing I have a couple of Excellent young men (my sons) to help me out. :-D The weather had gotten A little bit warmer, although no drier, after they came home from school.

Carolyn, last week I took a walk at a wildflower garden supported by a local wildflower society, "Garden in the Woods." A 45 acre woodland garden dedicated to temperate plants including about 60 ferns in their natural environment. I did not, however, take a picture of every fern. I am sorting through the 200 pictures many are ferns. It takes time. I will post the pictures soon.
