Here is my new plant for the day. I found it at a discounted price. It will live in our greenhouse for the Winter and go outside each Summer. Barb in Pa. Medinilla magnifica Medinilla magnifica Medinilla magnifica Medinilla magnifica Barb in Pa.

Interesting that you found a plant that someone asked for an ID last week. http://www.gardenstew.com/about26080.html There is some info about plant in the post. Jerry
Those are sooo lovely! Congratulations on your discount find. I am rather envious of your greenhouse now. I've always wanted one or two of those, but I know they can't survive our livingroom during winter. *sigh*
Thanks everyone. Jerry, I saw that post last week but didn't remember it at all. Lots of good info there. It seems it's total temperature range is about 55 to 75 degrees. They were sold in grocery stores this Spring. At $35.00 to $55.00 depending on pot size I was not going to have one, but more than half price, I couldn't get my hands on it fast enough. $14.00 made me happy. I was actually looking for Allium giganteum. I found about a dozen very large bulbs just out of bloom for about $5.00 each. I gave some away to friends and with the rest I want to add them to our bulb garden down by the driveway. They are about to split into 2 bulbs per pot but I will let them live together for a few years as I don't know anything about bulbs. Barb in Pa.
very very beautiful Barb :-D I bought the plant at reduced price, but only leaves,,without flowers :-D
Hi Barb, You have a beautiful, unusual and very challenging new acquisition. In its native Philipines, it often grows as an epiphyte up high in the warm, humid tropical rainforest. Hence, the challenge. You may want to consider keeping it in your greenhouse year round, as it does not tolerate low humidity well at all, even in summer. Outside, it will need protection from any direct sun. To promote flowering each year, it is essential to keep it potbound and provide a rest period from November to February. During this period, provide cool temps around 55-60 degrees F and keep the soil just barely damp enough to avoid wilting. Medinilla is also very sensitive to water quality, particularly water that is hard or alkaline. If this is an issue where you are, then use filtered or distilled water. Other than that, this is an easy plant!! ~Will
