Hope to keep them blue using rusty nails around the base of the plant.

I love hydrangeas, those are beautiful.

I have one coming along nicely that I bought at an end of the season sale at Lowe's last year. I have no idea what kind or color so it will be a total surprise...I just hope it blooms.

So, so pretty! What happens to it if you don't put the rusty nails around it?
I have one that is (alwasy) blue and has orange tiger lillies planted in front of it and when they are both in bloom, the orange with the blue is exciting.

Hydrangeas have never been a favourite of mine for the garden but I do like the colour of yours. I find it fascinating that they can change colour according to what type of soil they are planted in.

    Those are lovely :stew1:
Around here we call them Christmas Roses since they bloom around Christmas time - always a winner and sure colour in the garden - yours reminds me of the holidays now - wonderful.
THe rusty nail - clever you.

Daisybeans - the Hydrangea flowers will be pink then. THey are sensitive to pH and the colour of the flower indicates the soil pH where they are planted.

Thanks all. My grandmother had these all around the old farm house when I was a young girl. I remember them vividly and want to try and re-create the ambiance. :stew1:

I love hydrangeas -- my neighbor and I have some very pretty ones that are quite old. Mine is beautiful clear blue. His, more purply-pink. Neither of us try to change the colors. I had never heard of the rusty nail bit to change the PH. I saw a hydrangea bush at the nursery last week that had beautiful chartreuse colored blooms. Very different looking. I didn't get the name of it -- was too absorbed in looking.

DB you can barely see a bit of chartrerse in the blooms. They were more that color than the blue when I got them. :stew1:

I know, I did notice that -- I love the variation of color there. Hmmm, are you thinking maybe the ones that I saw at the nursery would eventually become more blue too? Could be... I was so busy looking at other things.

I like the color of your hydrangeas KG.
Mine usually are white to sometimes a lite green. I'm hoping to see a change of color this year, I put red wood chips under my bushes last fall. Thanks for sharing yours.

DB even pink Hydrangeas will turn blue if the soil is the right PH. That's why I use the rusty nails. If I just left them alone they would turn pink.
