Some of you asked awhile back to see my asparagus but I don't know how to post individual pics from that site to this site so here is the album: http://picasaweb.google.com/trudyjean05 ... rdenSpring If someone knows how please tell me cuz I haven't figured it out yet, thanks an enjoy.
Your garden looks great. It's nice to see that you've been able to harvest asparagus. I wonder if those carrots will grow for you.
Thanks D, they are growing but the last time I grew them in spring they had a green taste an I didn't like them. But I sowed them in early spring that year. The next time I sowed them in fall an the winter cold sweetened them up an they were wonderful. That pic I sowed them really to late for them to be harvested come the winter an they just sat there. I'm hoping they won't have that "green" taste, so time will tell. This year I plan on sowing them in July/August so they can have time to grow b4 it gets cold like I did a year or two ago. Fresh taste so much better than store bought.
Tire containers? Hello there, Nice pics! Are those tires you have used for plant containers? I have a few available and was wondering if it is safe to use them...I have some health issues and am needing to begin using raised beds. I have started a few vegetables in my new raised beds but the tires, if safe would be great for some more plants
I have never heard of planting in bales. Does it work pretty well. What is the process for this. I think this is a pretty interesting idea!
Yes beachbum, they are tires that I'm using. I have read everything I could get my hands on about whether they leach out chemicals. You would have to decide for yourself as to whether you wish to use them or not. I don't have a problem using them. My property has enough slope to it that I cut them up an used them as borders/raised beds so my soil/seeds/plants wouldn't wash away when we had rain. I also needed something that wouldn't rot any time soon an as free as possible. $$ to tight even 3 yrs ago for me. Also using old dryer drums an those large nursery pots that large trees come in. Xylona, this is my first year with the bales. I experiment all the time an so it will be interesting to see how it works. So far nothings died, lol.
Tires and Tubs Thanks Trudy, I think I may just give that a try myself. Gardening is not cheep but my favorite pastime and I am on a very limited budget. I like it that the bottom being open will provide good drainage. I also have a sloping yard. Good luck with everything!
Thanks yawl. I've been very pleased so far with the garden. I've amended the soil for 3 yrs now an it gets better every season. Now to keep the rabbits out.
