And am I ever happy about it!! :smt026 :smt026 :smt026
You see... my neighbors have tons of old cars, farm equipment etc stacked in their pastures... we're almost surrounded by it all!
And since I've sectioned off a part of the backyard for my flower garden... there was no way I was going to continue to look at all that junk in the background.
Here's what it looked like (and this doesn't show you a smidgen of what's out there).

So... for my Valentines' prezzie.... hubby & big bro started working on a privacy fence for me.
I got the panels from one of my work clients for free. My brother was complaining that they weren't perfect. Who cares? They're doing their job. And I've got some trumpet vines just waiting for a place to grow.

I'll have to check with the client and see if he has any more fence panels he wants to get rid of. But in the meantime, I'm totally thrilled with this start.

MUCH better view and being imperfect gives them character. Vines and some rustic wood shelves holding trailing plants or interesting garden junque and they will a great backdrop for you flower garden.

Yes Toni... EXACTLY what I was thinking. I've got stuff to put on them already.
My brother said that he'd deny putting up anything so ugly. Hubby told him... guess you don't know your little sis too well... she's gonna love it!

Great looking fence! It will also be a windbreak for your flowers, and perhaps give them a bit of shade when needed. Toni's idea of containers with trailing plants is so good it makes me wish I had such a fence.
We are fortunate in that the fields around us are tidy. I simply do not understand people who have so little respect and love for the land that they park rusty cars and equipment all over it!

Jane... It would break your heart to see their land. There's even old SEMI trucks parked out there. It's just horrible... and their land is on 3 sides of ours. Yuck!
But back to the fence... It's really not going to be in my garden area... but sort of behind and to the side of it. I'll try to get a better photo to show what I mean. Even though I do plan on putting some vines & plants out there,it's mostly just a privacy fence. Plus that's where the compost bin is going to go too.

I wish I had a tall wooden fence, replacing our see-thru chain link is on the to-do list for next year.

I had a great-uncle who lived in southeast Ft. Worth and had a back yard filled with cars and other vehicles rusting away. I am guessing he was a hoarder before it was diagnosed as a mental illness.

Guys look at a fence like that and see ugly or at best utilitarian ....gardeners see sooooo many beautiful things happening there after they get through with it. ;)

With the price of scrap metal these days, these folks could make a small fortune!
Money... help the environment... AND have tidy pastureland?? Who wouldn't want that? Oh wait... I know the answer to that one!

The better view will make the plantings look that much better. The fence gives you an added vertical dimension to work with.

Oh, I just remembered....last year going down to Fredericksburg we saw a few rusted out pickup trucks and a smallish dump truck that the land owner had positioned along the fence line, filled the back with dirt and thrown in wildflower seeds. Those were some awesome planters!

That sounds very cool! Sure wish I had them for neighbors.
There's an old truck in Zavala (East Texas) that's right on one of the main roads. It is displayed very nicely and decorated to match the changing seasons with beautiful flowers.
Some people just know how to make their junk look nice!

Gosh Cheryl I thought my neighbours were bad but yours take the biscuit. Ours have a very neglected garden (full of weeds, holes and totally overgrown) but nothing on the scale of what you had to look at. Thank goodness you've now got a fence that blocks off all those junked cars. It's going to look so pretty once you get the plants in situ. I know how excited and happy you must be with your new privacy screening - I certainly would be too.

    Looks MUCH better Cherylad!
I have the same sort of problem here ... my neighbor has junk scattered around his yard and always has half done projects everywhere too. Nothing ever gets put away either - until the day before father-in-law comes to visit. Then they are all outside cleaning up the yard! It makes me laugh!

Netty... I sure wish there was someone visiting they'd clean up for! But there is hope. Rumor has it that since the "Mom & Dad" have both passed away, the children may be selling the old house/land. Fingers crossed on that happening!
But in the meantime...privacy fence and more fence!
Jane and others... here's a photo showing my gardening area and how the fence comes into play since it's really not in "my area". But I was thinking last night.... who says I can't extend my area? :-D
