I know I have mentioned that I do not have a garden, just a small patio back yard. This back yard is however bordered by an historic (1830) railway embankment. The embankment is now covered with a variety of mature trees, some I know are well over 100 years old. I sleep at the rear of the house and I have the benefit of these views through the window each morning with the sweet chestnut and a small oak tree showing off some autumn colour right on my bank...
There was a tree in the gap, on the other side of the embankment, which was felled some years ago because it was potentially dangerous. I counted 154 rings on the stump so it started life only about 20 years after the first train ran on the line on 5 May 1830 This is the actual 1830 locomotive now in the city museum.
Oh boy if only that tree could have talked. Can you imagine all the good and not so good stories it could tell?
Gorgeous view Raddang and 154 years of age is a pretty darn good run. Be interesting IF it could recount all the things it saw come and go during that span.
Interesting posting, Raddang. I enjoy riding trains The story about the tree with all those rings was interesting to hear.
You have a lovely view, and an interesting history of the embankment. We have trains that pass daily on the tracks on the other side of the highway. There is something about trains that is both nostalgic and interesting. Love your 1830 engine!
