Can you help ID this mystery plant? Someone is donating it to the church's plant sale and they don't know anything about it. I know its a long-shot.... but thought I'd ask for help anyway. And thanks in advance!
Cheryl, it looks somewhat like a Lady Bank's Rose, but I'm not sure. Can you ask the donor if the shrub blooms in the spring, just once a year? If so, are the blooms white or yellow? If it is a Lady Banks, be sure to put a warning tag on it about the size it grows--up to 20', and as wide.
If that's what it is and it does remind me of mine when it was new...., mine didn't come with such a warning tag
We were manning a Texas Parks and Wildlife booth at a local exposition, and talking about native plants and Wildscapes, etc. A lady came by and said she bought three (THREE) Lady Banks roses to cover her daughter's 8' fence that screened her garbage cans. She bought the three from the Master Gardeners' booth, who had assured her in a year or two (?) the roses would screen the fence. I don't think people realize how big and strong this rose is. It can cover a 30' pergola, tear siding off a workshop, and eat a trellis.
Mine is in the process of smothering an arbor and planning an assault on both the grape arbor and a Hackberry tree.
Since the only thing I have to go on right now are the leaves, I'm just not positive it's that monster ya'll are talking about. I did find a page that shows the Lady Bank's leaves pretty clearly http://www.ag.auburn.edu/landscape/dbpages/rosa_banksiae.html They just don't seem to match the mystery's leaves. I'll ask the owner this evening if it's ever flowered. Thanks!
Ooops I think you are correct about the leaves. Rosa banksiae 'Lutea' (Lady Banks Yellow Rose, Yellow Lady Banks Rose)
Is it a wisteria? pretty much the same problem with its size though if it is the chinese wisteria. or it is a trumpet vine. Trumpet vines have orange tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds.
I hear y'all saying how aggressive Lady Banks is and I would still give my eye teeth to find one!! Anyone have any shoots or starters they'd like to share?? Our growing season is so short that what is aggressive elsewhere stays pretty controlled here
Where you are the weather would probably keep it more under control. We had no winter last year and mine just got way bigger than I ever thought it would. I trimmed it back in May after it bloomed and it is still growing and hanging everywhere. I can get you some cuttings in the mail....PM me your mailing address.
Compare to Campsis (trumpet vine.) There are various species, some native, some not. If it's Campsis and not native, I would compost it.
Still haven't had the chance to talk to the owners to see if it flowers. But I did sneak into their back yard and grab a twig off of it to take to the garden center with me. The leaves are almost identical to a cape honeysuckle (which I also grabbed a piece of), although much smaller. Hoping to catch them at home this evening. The smaller leaves are the "mystery" plant.
Cherylad did you ever find out what your mystery plant was? It does look like my honeysuckle. Just wondering?????
Hi Tooty... No I didn't. But it found a home. She's hoping it's a Honeysuckle... guess we'll find out if/when it blooms.
