I was going through some of the old pics I had taken on some of my cruises this morning. I came across this one that I took in July of 1966. That is Mt Vesuvius in the background. The fog is actually very heavy smog or air polution. This was taken at about 11 am. I always liked this picture, as it is a good one of the mountain but you don't see any of the clutter from the city.
Thanks Capt for the picture. You can barely see the slope of the mountain thru the smog on the left side. A really interesting photo, is that tiny dot of light above Vesuvius the Moon or large star? And that sea bird looks huge, do you know what kind it is? Many years ago when I had to drive from Evergreen down into Denver to work, I would come out of the mountains and see smog like that hanging over the city. Made me wish I could hold my breath all day.
A beautiful picture Capt.I thought the Mountain was the darker spot coming up out of the smog just to the left of the bird.
A really 'moody' piccie CK the bird really adds to the whole atmosphere. I remember smog in Edinburgh in the sixties mainly due to all the coal fires people had then - thankfully no more!!
The bird is just a Napoli garbage eating seagull as far as I know. Most of that smog was from coal fired cooking fires. And the garbage was burned back then too. Naples was a dirty looking town from all of the soot and the people did not care where they threw their trash etc. In fact it is tradition in Italy and especially Naples, that on New Year Eve you throw out any old stuff that you expect to get new during the new year. So if someone expected to get a new couch, the old one would go out the window. One New Years Eve there were several of us walking down a back street trying to wobble our way to the peirs to catch a boat back to the ship. Up ahead of us a refridgerator came out of a 7th floor apartment window. If we had been sober, we would have probably been right underneath it when it hit the pavement!
The last time I was there was the Holidays of 1979 and 1980. I took a USO tour to Rome and got to go to midnight Mass at St. Peters on Christmas Eve 1979. John Paul was the Pope. I was about 30 ft from him. Then the next morning I was in St. Peters Square for his Christmas Day address. Then on New Years Eve we had the run in with the fridge!
