My father-in-law gave me some horseradish starts that he bought at the nursery on a whim, because we both like to eat it ... he was told that it tends to be pretty invasive and to plant it in a container. He bought it in early Feb, they look like brown, dead stumps. He gave me two, they were in gallon pots. I kept them indoors in a sunny window until early April, then i let them sit outside on the deck for a week or two, then I transplanted them to a wine barrel that receives plenty of sun. I'm wondering if they are even alive since I've seen absolutely no change since the day they arrived. Its still fairly cool here - low 40's at night and high 50's, low 60's in the day. Just wondering when and how I'll know if they're gonna do anything - I could really use that pot for something else..... :-?
hi bhapimama, is the root dry and shriveled or was it plump and cream colored when you planted it? If you scratch the root with your fingernail, you should see some fresh root. if you can't scratch it with your nail, Most likely it isn't alive.
I have horseradish that has been in the ground forever. Just beginning to show life because of our cold spring. Sometimes horseradish can be persnickity about starting from root cuttings, but once started it can go great guns if in the right spot. Mine hasn't been invasive but a friends has been.
You are welcome. Mine is hardly doing anything, yet, either and mine had roots. Just make sure it has moisture in the barrel every "now and then" and don't worry too much over it. Some of those root crops take along time to see any growth.
last yeaar we planted some roots and they're slowly, due to the cold, coming up through the soil. i soaked the roots good and wrapped them in wet paper till i got them planted. hope yours grow well.
Horseradish... yum but stilll I hate it. If planted somewhere for good, in the veggie lot, fine. But I got some in my flower beds and I just can't get rid of it. Not invasive, I mean it's not propagating or spreading... but it keeps coming back from the roots.
