I am on dial up, which is already a pain. But this just makes it worse and add to that I am not a tech whiz. About two weeks ago we had a power outage for a few minutes during a storm. Now except for those sites that I visit regularly, nothing opens up. Well I guess I should say,, it opens but can take up to 30 minutes to do so. Its driving me nuts. Anything I can do to fix it? I looked at the start up menu but I have no idea what they are and do not know if I need them.
Are you using I.E. or a different browser? If you are using I.E. the best thing you can do is download Firefox to begin taking care of the problem. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ You might try cleaning out the History and Cookies to see if something went wonky there.
From your description I think your dial up card/modem could be having some problem. Check the speed of your connection, if the speed is not within the specification then it is definitely the dial up card/modem. You are able to open those sites that you visit regularly because the computer remember some of the information from those sites and upload them to your computer faster than those sites that you don't visit regularly and will be very slow if the site is your first time visit. Another possibility could be a corrupted browser and changing browser might help. If changing browser does not help then the root of the problem is definitely the dial up card/modem. Good luck!
Well, a few years ago something happened to my IE and the thing didn't work. The framework was there but no button worked. I would click on my bookmarks and it was dead. I just left it and have been using Mozilla. So because if this topic I just went to IE for the first time in a year. It is in working order. Just like it did years ago. I don't understand it. Must have got an update that was good for IE. Thanks for starting this topic that made me go to IE. I do like using it.
It is very easy to reset IE if that is what you are using, here's how go up to Tools/ Internet options/ go to Advanced Tab on top click it/ then look down pg. for Reset and click it, your puter will do the rest for you.
Thanks all. I am still not sure what happened, it completely crashed yesterday. Couldn`t even turn the computer off. So today I changed dial up numbers and something came up this morning about a corrupted file so I did system restore and restart. Seems to be OK now except for slow start up which I don`t think has anything to do with the browser. Yes I use IE but may try firefox. I am just not tech savvy enough to know if I can use it on dial up. Is it something that has to be downloaded? That can be a problem with this slow computer. I am going to write down that IE reset. Didn`t know you could do that.
You may have a lot of unnecessary programs at start up, when that happens booting up is slowed down. Go to Start/type in msconfig/ then click it and open, go to startup tab on top, look down list and take check out of things you do not need at start up, they will still be in your programs when you need them. Only take out things you know, like Yahoo, WeatherBug FB etc. etc.
I have done that but there are things I have no idea what are. I am going to check again though. Thanks.
