I have seen Black swallowtails but not with the reddish on them...I need help... Look closely..it has holes in its wings and they are ragged. We had a hail storm today and a lot of flowers were shredded...I am wondering if it got caught in the rain and hail?
I am leaning towards it being a female Black Swallowtail. The red color could have been from the sun shining thru it and it could be more orange than red. That I can find, the Black Swallowtail female only has one form but I can not find a good picture of the underside of it's wings to check for red or orange. Poor thing looks to have been in a life or death situation where he/she lost some of it's tail.
Bethie...your right...I just found out from a butterfly website for Wisconsin that it is a Red Spotted Purple..and I will be posting the pictures on the website for butterflys spotted in Wisconsin. Thank you...Sherry
Oh, I have never heard of that one. I was concentrating on the Swallowtails since you mentioned the Black Swallowtail. I checked the butterflies and moths of North America website and according to their info, the county I live in has never had a reported siting but two counties north of us has. I think I need to keep a closer watch on the butterflies we have, I just might be missing it.
