Well Friends I come again hat in hand looking for answers. The photos are of all my tomato plants, some with tomatoes and I only water them 2 times a week or sooner if water gauge says dry. This has been a bad year for growing here in NJ. I would appreciate any help besides pulling the plants and say the heck with this year. is it really hot there?? i watered my toms on a daily basis when i grew them. . . do you have them in the greenhouse or outdoors??
Photos #1 and #2 look normal for tomatoes in mid-August. The old leaves die, taking some of the stem with them. You can just cut those off if you want to. The tomato in photo #3 seems to be suffering from a virus, perhaps tomato spotted wilt virus, or tobacco mosaic. In either case, there isn't a cure. Don't do anything rash like trashing the plant until someone more knowledgeable chimes in.
My plants This Summer was worse than last year The first 2 photos came from elsewhere and the 3rd came from locally. At first I thought I watered them tooo much, but I'm not sure. I still have tomatos on the plants, but they're very small. I thank everyone so far for your help. ed
Are the first two the ones I sent ?? Die back is pretty much normal this time of year !! Take a couple of top limb cuttings and start rooting them for fall !! Are you feeding them ??
I think you have Blight. It will work it's way up the main stem. Your tomatoes will probably form and grow and new flowers will get some size before October but the plant won't look to happy. It comes from the soil. It lays dormant till you put the post in the ground and then when it rains it splashes up and infects the plant. Don't forget before it frosts pick all the tomatoes off the plant and put them in a brown paper bag, gently. Add a sliced apple and they all will ripen for you. Roll the top down and seal it. Check them everyday when you bag them up. Barb in Pa.
