My wooden birdfeeders have finally literally fallen apart from years of rain, heat, squirrels and birds so I found a couple of new ones on sale Sunday.

The large metal one needs to be mounted on a stand which will be done one evening this week.

But this one I hung up outside the window near my computer. I expected the first visitor would be a squirrel and it might have been one that I didn't see.
The lady Cardinal I did see flew off before I could get back to the window with the camera.

Later in the day I saw this on the limb....

And this is what I have seen most of the morning so far...

It appears to be a difficult feeder for the squirrel to master so she isn't emptying it as quickly as she would have the old one.

Toni, I bought two very similiar to yours this year...and if you think the squirrels will not find a way to get the food, you are sadly mistaken. They hang upside down on the feeder, hang on a tree limb and reach to get the food. They have to be one of the most agile creatures on this earth. I don't think there is a bird feeder that is squirrel proof. I finally gave up trying to feed the birds, because I was feeding squirrels instead! :-x

I once witnessed a squirrel that climbed my Sunflower and was contentedly munching on the seeds about 6' in the air.

Oh, yeah, I know where there is a will there is a way when it comes to squirrels and birdfeeders. I have seen them in so many contorted positions on the other feeders.

I try to keep 5 or 6 birdfeeders filled so the birds have something to eat while the squirrels are feasting at their favorite dinning spot.

Our squirrels here, we sometimes call them kittens or cats only because their black in color.
I really shoud think about putting something out for the oreals in the spring. We have a few of them around here.

What kind of squirrel is that? It looks different from the regular gray squirrel. With that redish tint to it one might think that it was a fox squirrel.
They are such clever little demons, aren't they.

Congratulations on your new bird feeders toni. I wouldn't mind feeding a squirrel or five as well as the birds. Our squirrels are small, red and full of mischief too, and with the cutest faces.

Sjoerd, it is an Eastern Fox Squirrel. Full grown they can be 20-30 inches (50-75 centimeters) nose to tail tip and around 3 pounds (don't know what converts to). The color variation we have here in Texas has a grey back with rust-colored undersides.

Randy calls them tree rats and some people call them dinner.

Nice feeders Toni. I think the squirrels are super smart. They've always emptied my feeders no matter how I've tried to stop them. They are cute I think and they can be fun to watch especially if there are two or more.

Since I started putting out the corn/seed mix they sell in the stores for the squirrels, they don't bother the feeder as much. As long as I remember to put it out that is. Good luck Toni and enjoy your new feeders.

Ok then, Toni---I thought it looked a bit big for a gray squirrel, but pictures can be deceiving.
    It is a pretty thing.
