Someone hacked our computer. We took it offline. dr is going to use it without the internet to do his writing. We bought an Acer Aspire. Today, I bought a 2 inch think book. Windows for Dummies 8.1. After I read it I can set up the new computer. May be a few more days. It's not a large print book. Otherwise, things are doing okay here. Still hot and humid but very cloudy. Only have had a few raindrops. Couldn't even call it rain. dooley
We had to replace my computer weekend before last and I am still finding things that have changed because of upgrades on our operating system (we don't use Windows). My old computer is being used by 4 research projects, SETI, Einstein, an asteroid search and a numbers thing...can't remember the names exactly. It's on all the time so they split the time and usually get 6 hours each per day. Had SETI and Einstein using it during the overnight hours when I wasn't using it over the last several years but they only got a about 4 hours each then.
Good luck with the book Dooley. I usually leave the reading to one of the kids as I hate following written instructions. They then show me how to do everything and I learn much quicker that way.
I just inherited one of my brother's old computers. Gotta be better than that thing I have now at home... Going to check and see if I can upgrade it to be able to run my work programs so I can do some freelance work. Good luck getting your's all set up and running!
I think I need to find a computer nerd in the vicinity who knows all the shortcuts. The book has 1.029 pages. I'm on page 102. I may get everything set one of these days. I can use Internet Explorer so I'm not totally out of it. dooley
Don't forget to install virus protection on both the old and new machine. Avast is the best I've found so far, you can download a free copy here http://www.avast.com/en-ph/index They offer extended protection for an additional fee, but the free version (It's free for home users, businesses are expected to pay) offers plenty of protection. If you're adventuresome, try installing Linux on the old machine. It'll wipe the hard drive clean and it comes with the Linux equivalent of the Microsoft Office Package and the free equivalent of Photoshop. Windows viruses can't affect it. One of the better versions can be downloaded from http://xubuntu.org/ This is the version we loaded on Toni's new machine and she's quite happy with it. When you boot Linux from the CD, you can try it without installing. It'll be horribly slow since the CD responds far more slowly than the hard drive, but you can get a feel for what it's like. One other bit of advice. Don't install Google Chrome. It looks pretty, but it does tend to take over your machine and can slow it down considerably.
Thank you for the information. I will install the Avast antivirus. I've used it before. I need to see about Linux. Maybe it will work for me. I still have to read the book and see. I'm working on it so should be done in a month or so.lol dooley
