Hi all, I am new to the whole gardening thing this year. I have had a few plants in the past. But have decided to go bigger this year and see what comes of it. Any one have any inexpensive ideas to build soil? I have very sandy soil and am starting a compost, but am looking for other ideas as well.
Hello from vermont. I am in Vermont as well. An easy way to build up your soil would be to use peat moss. Till it in either by hand or with a rototiller. If you don't have a rototiller you can probably ask your local plant pantry, garden center if they know of someone you could hire. Peat moss comes in bagged bales. Also think about adding compost and manure will make the soil more rich. I use seashell compost purchased at a garden center in bags, you can also purchase worm doo which is great for the soil. If you are using a raised bed for your veggie plants then they will do well in the peat moss as well. adds good depth and then you can add some bought soils to the top and mix it in. I have done this in the past and everything grew really well in it. Bags of top soils can be purchased, I look for sales. It isn't too expensive, but if you can get 10 for $20.00 it helps as well. the first year you will put more money into purchasing soil etc. There are some veg/fruit that do well in sandy soil, peppers and watermelon like this type of soil. Good luck and have fun!
Welcome to novice101 from coastal mid-Norway! Please tell us what you have in mind for your garden, and also we'd love to see some photos of your progress. You've picked a good place to join, lots of knowledge on this site. I'm not very good at enriching soil, but I predict some of our experts will be along shortly.
Hi Novice, welcome to the Stew from north Texas. We would love to hear your plans and maybe see pictures of where your garden will be....and progress pictures are a must. The most important part of gardening is building up your soil. It will be a few months before you will have your own compost to use so buying some now will start your garden then your own compost will an added benefit as you garden grows.

Howdy from florida! I have very sandy soil here and I use lots of manure from the local farms. I als take my kids with me in the woods and dig up a bunch of worms and let them run free in the soil as they continuosly poop and breed.
