Hello. My name is Adam, and I'm from central MO, zone 6A. Growing up, my dad usually planted 2-4 tomato plants every year and I helped him take care of them. 2013 was my first real garden. I had multiple varieties of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers, all of which I bought as pre started plants. And with just a small amount of effort, my little garden did fairly well. I then moved to an apartment in a larger city with no yard, so I've been missing gardening. However, I've recently moved back to my home town and have a yard again. So I'm excited to have a garden going, and I'm doing more research and working harder on it this time. I'm already thinking ahead to next year and possibly buying a good light to start seeds indoors. I'm also looking in to learning how to make my own hot sauce, since I'm a hot sauce/spicy food fanatic, so I have planted a lot of peppers. This year I have 9 tomato plants (Was 11, but I think I lost 2 by transplanting when they were too weak), 34 pepper plants (8 different kinds), 4 zucchini plants, some cilantro, some Thai basil and some Red Zeppelin onions. I also planted seeds for 3 rows of corn on May 6th and 1 row of bush beans on May 7th, but nothing seems to have sprouted. They aren't in the best part of my garden, and conditions haven't been ideal (Very cold for May lately) so I may re till and re plant in the next 3-4 days. Anyway, I'm relatively inexperienced and this is all a learning experience for me. And this seems like a place where I can gain some knowledge. Thanks!
Hi MOFishin and a hearty welcome to GardenStew I'm a spicy food fan myself so I wish you a lot of luck with your pepper quest! Great to have you here.
Hi Adam,..welcome to GardenStew,..looks like you got off to a good start with your collection of plants,..i wonder what happened,..i hope it was only the fact it was too cold,..what was growing in the soil before you began sowing and planting and did you start everything outdoors first?. You can do very well starting seeds indoors or under glass outside,..if not glass then clear plastic will do the job keeping in the heat.
Great to have you here with us Adam and I'm sure you'll find our community the best for giving a helping hand. We all work together here and no problem is too big or too small.
The only things I was trying to grow from seed this year was the beans and corn. Besides the cold weather and lack of sunshine, I'm not sure the soil is the best. To make matters worse I didn't get that part of it tilled well because my friend's tiller kept breaking down on us. So after all the cold rain we've been getting, grass has flourished in that part of the garden, while my beans and corn don't seem to have sprouted. I'm thinking I will till again and replant. Possibly get some aged manure to add to the soil. I'm planning to start everything indoors and early next year.
Nice to see you are not going to give up,..yep manure will work wonders and starting everything indoors will be a great bonus,..fingers crossed for you.
Hi there and welcome ! Yes you likely need to replant the beans and corn. But do not worry too much,, we had to replant twice last year and are far from inexperienced. Its just a matter of weather and temperature. We have been lucky and have had almost perfect weather this year,,so far,, in our part of Texas. The corn and beans would do better planted straight into the soil where it will grow but some have had success with transplanting. It would take me a month to transplant the amount of corn, beans and peas that we grow. Just hang around here and we will have you gardening like a pro in no time.
