Summer is always the time when the house plants are a great deal price-wise. When visiting my local nursery I saw these two and had to give them a try. This first is from Australia and has a very thick leathery texture. Said to stay small, common name Dwarf Bird's-nest fern (Asplenium goudeyi). Asplenium goudeyi ( photo / image / picture from Jewell2009's Garden ) Asplenium goudeyi ( photo / image / picture from Jewell2009's Garden ) The plant that really caught my eye though was a Peace Lily. I had never seen one with variegated foliage. It is called Domino, and the picture doesn't do justice to the coloring. I am hoping that this Spathiphyllum will stay smaller. The last one I had to give away because it got to 3 feet (1 meter) and was a couple of feet wide. When you have a small house the plants have to stay in proportion . Peace Lily Domino (spathiphyllum) ( photo / image / picture from Jewell2009's Garden ) Thanks for looking at my two new beautys!
Jewell those are both very pretty and healthy looking. I haven't seen a varigated leaf on the peace lily either. If I were you and wanted to keep it small, try keeping it in a small pot, root bound. I don't know if that will help or hurt the plant. Maybe others will know!
I find ferns and Peace lilies very easy to care for but I've never seen the variagated form of the Peace lily before either.
Pretty, Jewel! Never thought about the economy of buying houseplants now!!! Great idea! R: controlling size with pot size -- I have one that is root bound right now and I've been watching it to see if it can make it. It doesn't seem to like being root bound. It droops more frequently as if the leftover space between the roots can't hold enough water... and they do like water. I believe it is telling me to repot it!! Anyone else have an opinion on the rootbound issue? I am curious.
Well Jewell-- you scored on those alright. Do you already have a couple of nice places chosen to receive these? The leaves of the fern have such a rich colour. The 'Domino' will fit in anywhere, I expect.
Daisybeans and Countrygal: I have always moved the Peace Lilies up into larger pots as they have grown. On reading up I found out that there are a couple of different varieties of Peace lilies bred for different sizes, and now varigation. The seedlings I always purchased wanted to reach that 3 foot size, and will start to complain if not allowed to have a pot to match their growth . Fortunately I can always find a taker for the large plants (so far any way). This newer variegated variety is supposed to be less vigorous so I am keeping my fingers crossed for small. Netty I am sure I could find a tough one for you to try Eileen I had never seen the variegated either. Guess they are becoming more common. Sjoerd - yes, I have a place for them. My husband was going to take the fern to work...but I kind of like it here next to the computer.
Jewell, the one that I have that had pink blooms on it is a small size, really slow growing. The leaves are a little bit thicker and almost a little leathery. However, I have found it to be kind of a temperamental little plant. Can't seem to find it a spot that it likes. The pink blooms were pretty though.
MaryAnn - I have had that variety of peace lily also. I agree with you they do seem tempermental. I don't have it around anymore. I walk a fine line between no care success and out the door (too big or no growth). lol
I must admit, I'm a little over that plant and the Christmas cactus. They both jsut sit there doing nothing.... nothing, nothing, nothing.
Lovely house plants! Good luck with them. I can't have anything that requires regular watering, they die from lack of care.
Lovely plant pics Jewel!!! I only have one African Violet, 2 Christmas Cactus and 2 varagated ivies on trelises and a hanging pot with plants I don't know the name of (it was a gift a few years ago) in the house. Your 3rd post to Maryann was a hoot with those two cute smiles!
