I have mentioned before that I toss nickels around like manhole covers, and am known for being "frugal". Our 20-something year old lawn mower lost its self-propelled feature (its tires were also bald and the grass bag was pretty frayed). I figured I needed the exercise of pushing it around. My husband, who is terribly considerate and didn't want me to break down too, got us a new lawn mower (he is less frugal). Gee, I love the thing! I can stop it, disengage the blades (motor still running), dump the grass bag, replace the bag and engage the blades. No more yanking on a starter cord every time I empty the grass bag! It also starts easily. And it is self-propelled. In fact, it nearly pulls me around the yard. Getting a new piece of equipment that makes life easier sure is a pleasure (I'm easily pleased.)
Less mowing time means more gardening time. Win! Win! Your plants will love the extra attention. Jerry
Cool... I got new mowers two years ago, and really appreciate them. You will too. [one rider because my yard is about 3 acres and my legs have troubles; the other a push for places the rider cannot get to.]
We have a riding mower too, actually a lawn tractor with a mowing deck, for doing the barn lot, orchard area, front yard and paths to the pond. It took me several weeks to get used to it--constantly afraid it was going to tip over on me, or that I'd break it. Now I'm an accomplished bull rider (the brand is Toro) .
With acreage you have to take care of I am thrilled for you. I hated mowing the yard, Hubby hated it too that's pretty much why we have no lawn to mow anymore....thankfully we live on a typical size city lot
I am still happy you have a new mower to work with. Fighting with an old worn out mower and keeping it repaired is a royal pain.
I am always keeping my fingers crossed that mine mower won't break down which is coming to 30years old soon. I think I'll be dreaming of your New Lawn Mower tonight!!
I used to mow the lawn at my parents when I lived with them.. They didn't have a large lawn, and had a push mower. It was NOT self propelled and was a pain to start. When my man and I bought our home, we had to buy a brand new lawn mower.. and it was a pretty big shock to me the first time I used it because it was so nice using our new one vs the one my parents had. How much do you have to mow? From the sounds of other member's post, it must be quite a bit!
Northern Lady, I too had to mow the lawn when I was a youngster and lived at home--we had about an acre, but some of it was a large vegetable garden. Well I remember the day we retired the old reel mower and got a gas mower. Heaven! Now on the farm I mow the back yard, trim the front, and do around the chicken coops and barn with the walk-behind. The ground covered amounts to an acre or a bit more. We have 9 1/2 acres, and what isn't covered by the house, barn, pond, and workshop is mowed with the riding mower, which my husband usually operates. Hmmm, I wonder if I've been snookered . . . .
MG-Sounds like a gem of a mower and hubby. What brand is it so when we go to get a new lawn mower in the next 10yrs.I will know what brand to look for. I love the fact that you can disengage the blades and not have to shut off the mower to empty the catch bag. That is such a pain to have to restart it everytime you empty the darn thing. I never had considered a sefl-propelled mower before we got my stepsons old one. All we did was sharpen the blades I do not think they had ever been sharpened. Started it up and away it went. I love using it to cut around the electric fence in the pasture. Self-propelled is the way to go.
Tooty, it's a Honda. It also has a mulching attachment for when you don't want to bag. I have a hate/hate relationship with machinery, but I can't find anything bad to say about my walk-behind mower!
Glad you like your new mower. We got anew rider last year. Had lot of trouble with it at first.Faulty design on blade. Went through 3 in 4 hours of mowing.Had to mow 3/4 acre + church lawn with 2 push mowers.Raised a lot of h*** with company + dealer. They made it right.I also buy our autos from them.
