I went looking for an Abelia, they are evergreen down here and it occurred to me the other day that I will need something evergreen out in the new front yard garden so it doesn't look so baren in winter. Found an Abelia Rosado Abelia x 'Edward Goucher' Then I had to wander around the sale racks and found this Angelonia angustifolia- Summer Snapdragon and Viburnum dentatum (PS: Viburnum dentatum (Arrowwood Viburnum)). I have white and purple summer snaps, now I have a pink. It's an annual, don't know if it will reseed. The Viburnum is looking really scraggly but I hope to baby it to new growth before fall. Should I go ahead and cut off the tall stems now to give it a better chance of getting healthier? These two had very little to no info on them. I know one is a Penstemon and the other is a Daylily. The fun will be seeing what color they are.
Toni it should be OK to cut the viburmnum down as it should encourage it to get bushier before winter. I love the way you say "new plants that came home with me - I do that too and Ian always says -"yeh but via my wallet emptying."
I got them at Lowe's, when we walked into the garden area Randy went on inside to get some things and I went looking for the Abelia....that is all I was going for, honest!! Had that in my hand when suddenly an empty shopping cart appeared in the aisle in front of me. Thankful for it, I put the large pot inside the cart and started pushing it towards the door to find Randy. (Insert Twilight Zone music here) But the cart had it's own agenda, the wheels had a distinct and strong pull to the right and trying to keep the cart on a straight path was beginning to hurt my wrists. Finally, with a jerk it started dragging me towards the sales racks and didn't stop until I was in the middle of them. Then (faster and louder Twilight Zone music here) plants started leaping off the racks into the cart. And not just anywhere in the cart but they positioned themselves under the spreading stems of the Abelia as if hiding from me. So I met Randy at the register and smiled wanly. He just shrugged his shoulders, nodded and said "It happened again didn't it?"
I like all your plants that chose you toni. They will be fun to watch grow and then find out what color they are in the Spring.I stayed fairly clear of most garden centers this year because carts steer themselves and jump into my cart too.I thing all total I spent about $15.00 to $20.00 this year only. I only bought a very few plants this year.I planted mostly seeds so many to water now.I didn't want to get more but my friend Earlene gave me more than a few so I now have tripled my watering anyway but I sure do like them.
I love twilight zone music when i shop,,for anything! it always comes out good for me,,lol. Bad for KB, but good for me,, but he just smiles and helps the wayward items to the registar belt. Bless men who understand the twilight zone syndrome. Great plants,, i can't wait to see what they all look like when they grow up.. you know me and plants don't have a clue but i sure love to ohh and ahh over them.
You have a vivid imagination Toni Great finds, looking forward to some update photos when they are in the ground.
It's not imagination Frank - it really does happen to us plantaholics - honest!!! I've had plants jump off the shelves screaming "Save me please. Take me home with you Eileen." Those programmed carts are made especially for us so that we don't miss a single plant that's on sale.
Ha ha ha... I've just GOT to visit that garden center, with it's magical carts. You made quite a haul! I can get so jelous sometimes....
Thanks Eileen, I think I will get it cut back a bit and put it over in the shady area with the pineapple Lily just so it won't get too sunburned afterwards, maybe until I see new growth on those stems.
Great buys Toni. I've been trying very hard to steer clear of garden centers for the very same reason. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to control myself!
I love it: I just don't know what happens to those shopping carts once our hands touch them-Off they go on their own. Oh yes, lets not forget about those poor unwanted clearance plants that no-one else wants. Those especially seem to jump into my cart and are given a new home. You found some great plants there toni. Way to go.
I love to buy end of season on just about anything, but especially plants. We still have approximately 3 and a half months of good growing temps, maybe further into November too. Except for the Abelia, the others were all under $2 each. I am going back this weekend at some time, there were a lot of plants in larger pots that were half price.
I love end of season sales. I got some great plants last year. I'm holding out going to garden centers for a bit longer. Good buys Toni. $2 and under.Wow!
I purposely go in the main door at Lowe's and HD, but somehow the cart ends up going through one set of doors and then even a second one. It's the strangest thing. I see other people trying to control their carts as well. And I end up with 'things' in my cart that I had no intention of buying, but I do. And all the way home, I can hear them saying 'thank you, thank you'. Plantaholics is right Eileen. That's what we are!!
