This is the new vegetable bed we dug last week. The doctor said I lost five pounds in the two weeks since I was there. It must have been digging this bed. It is 4 ft.x 16 ft and full of roots. Vegetable gardens ( photo / image / picture from dooley's Garden ) The old one has kale, spinach, swiss chard, brussel sprouts and carrots. I dug up the spinach and planted two new rows and they came up yesterday. I have a new row of swiss chard and lots of mesclun coming up. The old bed is 8 ft x 8 ft. Yesterday when we went to College Station we stopped at lowes and bought six bags of dirt to finish filling the new bed. All we have is sand so we have to add dirt and mix it in. I used all my compost. Today, I bought green beans, beets, carrots, lettuce and summer squash. I'm going to plant potatoes in a couple of weeks. We have to dig a space for them. In the back yard I have peas, radishes, arugula, pak choi and raddicio coming up. I'll keep digging and planting until I use up all of our space. Chance is getting quite adept and circling around the beds and running in between them. dooley
I can't think of a better workout than playing in the dirt. Those beds look wonderful. Can't wait to see all the goodies you get to harvest.
Question: Not being a veggie grower I am not familiar with the number of days necessary till harvest, so I don't know if the hot weather would shorten the growing season. Do you have to factor in the anticipated hot weather when starting veggies? Did last years excessive heat effect veggie yield? Jerry
What I'm growing right now is cool season vegetables. In March I will start summer vegetables. These may be affected by hot weather but if they have a bit of shade and water they may last into fall. In about August I will plant some more of the summer vegetables and harvest them before the first frost in November. Then, I will plant a fall garden that will be cool weather vegetables that will grow all winter as I did this year. We had fresh spinach, kale, swiss chard and several types of lettuce and carrots all winter. So, here in Texas I have four seasons of gardens. dooley
Nice work Dooley, err .... do you sow your seeds directly into the bed or you have a nursery and do a transplant?
Mostly I sow it right into the ground. Tomatoes and peppers and a few herbs are started in peat pots or nursery bought. dooley
I'd like to be able to have 4 season gardening! I do have some kale and cilantro that is still producing, but that's it.
I worried about that last night so I went out first thing this morning to check on them and they were doing fine. They are about an inch tall now. dooley
