I've already identified Christmas Fern, but today took a few pictures of what I think are 3 other varieties of ferns growing around the property. The first one is a Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis), the second and forth one looks like a Cinnamon Fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum), and I'm pretty sure the last ones are New York Ferns (Thelypteris noveboracensis). I'm not sure about the third one though.
At first I wasn't sure about the third one, but then I had a very hard time identifying a fern a couple years ago. I'm fairly sure it is a Phegopteris, probably Phegopteris connectilis, but Phegopteris hexagonoptera does look similar. Also, the Hay Scented Fern will be much smaller than the Cinnamon Fern which is quite large. Mine usually spans about 3-4 feet across if not more and about 3-4 feet tall. Hope this was helpful.
this is all 100% more than I knew yesterday, fun and thank you. as a note - this area is next to a small stream, which is mostly just storm ronoff that sort of dries out, but never quite really.
All of the ferns that have been mentioned love that kind of area and could tolerate a slightly drier area. Also your welcome and I had fun IDing them for you especially that 3rd one, lol.
showed these ferns on a little trail I made to my stepson. he seemed pretty excited about the trail and I got to look smart and show him, christmas, new york, and sensitive fern. we both though the sensitive fern was a funny name.
I'm still amazed by anyone who can tell the difference in ferns. They all just look so similar to me. Way to go Stewbies!
